I don't watch the show, but I'm genuinely curious, any chance this is more driven by a higher than usual number of female characters in general (so perhaps females constitute the most liked and most disliked characters?) rather than the implied anti-female-character bias of the audience?
Or that women are among the more compelling heroes AND villains?

That's the impression I got as well, not having watched it myself. There are a lot of female characters, and some of them do some pretty awful things apparently. I mean, when Amy Coney Barret was being confirmed for the Supreme Court, Twitter kept referring to her as some character from the series (I forget the name) and it was definitely not a nice implication.

And I've also witnessed some debate over some things that apparently major characters did that on the surface sounded awful to me but maybe there was context, so it was really controversial in general?

At any rate, it does seem to have a lot of female characters and some of them apparently do not-so-nice things, so I'm thinking you're right about it just having a lot of female characters to both root for and root against.

Serena Joy?

...I don't think so? I think "Aunt" something was what I kept seeing trending and was really confused until the little explanatory blurb in the sidebar said something about "users are comparing Amy Coney Barret to a character in The Handmaid's Tale". And then I still didn't know why, but at least I knew why I didn't know why. XD

Edit: Ah, Aunt Lydia. Thanks, later-in-thread anons!
