I read the text first and was like, "Oh that's kind of mean." And then I looked at her picture and was like, "Oh... yeah. She's okay." Oop @ me and +1 for you, OP.

I don’t see anything there that doesn’t fit with being “magically engineered”?

(Anonymous) 2022-01-13 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Just from this picture, I think her face doesn't look nearly symmetrical enough to be "magically engineered for maximum beauty". Especially her eyes seem really different, in both size and shape. But that might be the angle?

(Anonymous) 2022-01-13 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Newsflash
Everyone is asymmetrical to some degree.
I remember once seeing a photo of an already gorgeous male model. They photoshopped it so he was 100% symmetrical in the face and he just looked weird.

Okay OP

Who would you have cast?

Re: Okay OP

(Anonymous) 2022-01-14 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but Kerri Medders is that beautiful.

The actor shown looks very pretty, though!

NAYRT

The actress you named is definitely pretty, but she looks like the (Lily Rose Depp - any dynamism + Gigi Hadid) x basic.

Which is to say, definitely pretty, but gives me common girl next door. Otherworldly magically perfect vibes she does not give me. The actress in the picture looks a bit more like a doll, so I can see why she might have been cast. If I can think of someone similar in terms of looks that I would have cast, I'll write it.

I'm thinking young Emily Browning. Currently, Yara Shahidi (I think she's so beautiful and her face is super symmetrical, but that's my opinion lol)

Nobody IRL has been engineered for perfect beauty

(Anonymous) 2022-01-13 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP

A young Angelina Jolie maybe? Not possible of course, but as close to 'perfect' as I can think.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-13 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
na

Yeah, some people do end up winning the genetic lottery on beauty.

Young Morena Baccarin or young Vivien Leigh.

True, but there's no denying that some people get closer than others. Lol, my face could never mistaken for flawless beauty.

I feel you, OP. I was a huge LotR fan before the first movie came out, but I was also like 12, and I was crushed when we first saw the elves. Where was the ethereal elven beauty in those men in bad wigs?

I just think that at the end of the day, those types of characters just can't be real, so we'll always be disappointed.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-13 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Dunno anything about this show, but I think she's gorgeous. I would kill for naturally full lips like that. If she's just "okay," I'm a bridge troll!

(Anonymous) 2022-01-14 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was gonna say, she has a very fae sort of beauty to her? I dig it.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-14 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, the actress is gorgeous, but naturally so, not like someone who has fine-tuned their face for a while. You'd probably want Cher for that.

well what are the beauty standards in the book tho? does she get more description than "superior magical beauty" in the book, and if so does she fit it?

(Anonymous) 2022-01-14 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
This is from the book:

I had barely unlocked the door when it flew open and a tall girl pushed past me, surveying the room and then me with a critical eye. She was easily the most beautiful person I’d ever seen. Her wavy hair was deepest auburn, her irises large and golden; her skin was so smooth and flawless that she looked as if her perfect cheekbones had been carved from marble. She wore a cream-colored kefta embroidered in gold and lined in reddish fox fur.

Beauty is subjective and you can't get "super beautiful perfect angel" in a show/movie because everyone is already beautiful. There should be contrast to the look but you wouldn't get it with all this actresses with perfect skin, perfect teeth and perfect hair. So no actress is good enough for this type of character. For example all actresses namedropped in this thread are basically OK to me...

I got bad bews for you for season 2.

Eh, tbh, I found people's rapidly increasing beauty standards for TV/film actors kinda scary. And it doesn't help that the more beautiful they supposedly get the more lookalike (and mroe instagram-filtered-ready) they seem to me...

(Anonymous) 2022-01-14 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly

(Anonymous) 2022-01-14 11:15 am (UTC)(link)
I honestly wish books would stop having as many characters who are supposed to unrealistically beautiful, magically/scientifically engineered or not. It wouldn’t be a problem, and I wouldn’t feel this way, if it weren’t for the fact that almost any book could be have a potential movie or television adaptation. And that’s just asking for anyone who gets the part to be judged in a way that’s a little unfair to them. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and there’s always going to be a faction of people who think whoever gets the part isn’t beautiful enough. Not to mention nobody can live up to the standards the book creates for the characters. If people think living up to the beauty standards of models and celebrities is unrealistic, it’s a whole other level of unrealistic trying to live up to the standards of a written character who can be as otherworldly gorgeous as the author wants. Because books aren’t bound by the limitations of the visual world.

And I know that’s unfair to these books. They were here first, before any potential adaptations, obviously. And authors should be allowed to be as creative as they want, unbound by the reality we live in. It’s the fault of Hollywood and it’s contemporaries. But since adaptations are so prevalent, and could happen to any book, I still wish there was less otherworldly ethereal beauties in them.

I know this rambling comment probably didn’t make much sense, sorry to anyone who reads this lol. It’s hard to get how I feel across because I’m not certain how to explain why I feel this way in general.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-14 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I disagree that books should have fewer otherworldly flawless characters.

The adaptations of books with otherworldly flawless characters should just be animated. Problem solved.
