The voices were kind of average, I guess. Nothing horrific, but nothing amazing. They did work with who the characters were, even if it meant a less polished performance on the songs.

I think the songs are catchy, but maybe this is just me but the music and lyrics sounded not quite *there* for littler kids? Like, it's not that sing-a-long friendly?

The Family Madrigal went by too fast for me to pick up half the words the first time the words were sung, We Don't Talk About Bruno is great but halfway through it gets overcomplicated for a kids movie. Surface Pressure was probably the easiest sing-a-long. That was the thing that stood out to me more than voice quality. I think it would have been better if it was designed and planned for an older audience.

This!! I've been trying to figure out what's been scratching at the back of my brain since watching Encanto.

Its something between this and just.... how similar the music sounds to some of Lin's other songs. It does not help now that I've seen tiktok's splicing Hamilton songs with Encanto songs and they are almost the same in some places.

You know, I didn't realise when I watched it that the same guy wrote Hamilton, but I kept thinking the songs sounded oddly familiar and really wasn't surprised when I found out.

Kindly, he has a very distinctive style. Less kindly, he needs to be braver and move a bit further away from his Hamilton sound for his next musical.

Did you not have the intro featuring Lin Manuel Miranda as well as Stephanie Beatriz and John Leguizamo that played before the movie when you saw it? It played before the movie ever time I saw it in the theatre. That would have made it clear that he was the one who did the music, so I guess it wasn’t included everywhere, including possibly Disney+?

As someone who loves Miranda’s music(including his singing and rapping, don’t @ me), I disagree that he needs to move away from Hamilton. But even saying that, I think the music he created for Hamilton, Encanto, In the Heights, and Moana all have distinct differences in how they sound. To me at least.

Nope! Disney+ in the UK,so maybe it was missed off.

I think his music is great, I think his Encanto music is beautifully layered; I don't think the "Hamilton" style is good for a *Disney* musical for kids, which is a lot more specific - my fault for not being clear! The songs in a Disney kid's animated musical need to be as much of a toy as the merchandise they sell, and constructed in a way for kids to be able to sing incessantly at the top of their lungs, advertising to all and sundry who their favourites are so they get the right presents on their birthdays, etc.

But for Lin Manuel Miranda, I do wonder if Hamilton is casting a shadow here. Maybe he's clinging a little too closely to what was an overwhelming success, or worse and more likely, is being directed by the financial backer to make "a hit, y'know, like Hamilton", and is ending up going down a limited track because it was proven to sell and that's all the risk the backers are willing to take.

In the Heights was before Hamilton, Moana was done very closely after / concurrently with Hamilton, and Moana absolutely hit the right note, 100%, except for Shiny which was terrible.

Got it, then they definitely just didn’t include it everywhere.

That makes sense. And I don’t know why it didn’t get what you meant here sooner, considering I agreed with a different anon who said that a problem with some of the soundtrack is that the lyrics go by too fast, and it’s sometimes hard to make out what they’re saying. I think you were clear in what you meant, I’m just slow today lol.

I do get that concern. As much as I love his music, and his work in general, I would never want him to be burnt out trying to please some executives who just want new Hamiltons. That’s not good for creativity.

I do know In the Heights was made before Hamilton, and thus wouldn’t be influenced by sounding like Hamilton. I just included it because I love that play so much(the movie adaptation was okay too). And I agree that Moana was some of his best! And did a better job at having catchy songs with understandable lyrics that kids could actually sing along to, unlike some songs from Encanto. I love The Family Madrigal a lot, but it’s not going to be easy for every adult to sing or immediately understand all the words, much less a kid!

And I actually really love Shiny, even though it’s definitely the weak link in the Moana soundtrack. Most of my love is because Jemaine Clement is the one singing, because I’m a big fan of Flight of the Conchords lol.

*did like the movie though! It was fun, and I do like the songs on their own.

Yeah. I'm not a native speaker but I never have any issues usually. But in the Family Madrigal, especially towards the end, it all just turned to noise for me.
