I'm gonna have to watch this movie at some point. I don't wanna, but it has insinuated so many discussion spaces that if I want to keep up with discussions and references to it on so many other topics I'm just gonna have to. I'll probably torrent it though. I do have Disney plus, I just don't want to give them the click and contribute to its metrics.

I think you should give it a try! It's my favorite Disney movie of the past 10 years easily. Can I ask why you don't want to?

I'm going to watch it for the first time tonight, but I was surprised to read Stephanie Beatriz voices the character pictured. I know Beatriz didn't use her natural voice on B99, but she's still not really who I mentally heard when I saw that character.

I honestly disagree -- I thought Mirabel was great in her songs

And Luisa's rougher voice added a nice texture to her song. Especially on the change where she goes from talking about pressure to the idea of having time to enjoy relaxation.

Isabella was probably the most neutral sounding of the voices. She could have had some more pep but the songs didn't suffer for her.

I can't stand Mirabel's voice and always skip her solo on the soundtrack, like, it's legit painful to listen for me.

I thought they were okay in English, but I really loved the songs in Spanish. I have no idea if the VAs they used for the Spanish dub are professional singers or not, but the songs do sound better (to me, anyway).

(Anonymous) 2022-01-13 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I've done some reflecting on Isabel's voice after posting the secret and I think her solo is bad because it's set too low for her voice. You can really hear it in the line "What else can I dooo..." that the "do" isn't in comfortable range for her. The song doesn't sound dynamic enough because of this. /personal analysis over

I actually like it when voices aren't perfect, especially if it makes sense for the character. It actually kind of jars me out of a scene a little when a character who would have no access to vocal lessons or training sings like a songbird.

Same!

This is so weird. She sounded fine, good even. Just because she's not a soprano doesn't mean she's bad.

I don't know how you made that leap that strained bad voice = not a soprano.

You're entitled to your own opinion - I absolutely loved the songs in this movie! I loved how at times it felt like watching an actual musical. Maybe the singers weren't the strongest, but they all had their own charisma and unique sound that I thought added so much to the characterization.

I don't really need everyone to be Idina Menzel. It's nice sometimes for a sweeping power ballad, but I don't think the songs in this movie demanded something like that. Also, they did have Dos Oruguitas with a trained singer - I'm assuming both fully Spanish songs were, actually.

The voices were kind of average, I guess. Nothing horrific, but nothing amazing. They did work with who the characters were, even if it meant a less polished performance on the songs.

I think the songs are catchy, but maybe this is just me but the music and lyrics sounded not quite *there* for littler kids? Like, it's not that sing-a-long friendly?

The Family Madrigal went by too fast for me to pick up half the words the first time the words were sung, We Don't Talk About Bruno is great but halfway through it gets overcomplicated for a kids movie. Surface Pressure was probably the easiest sing-a-long. That was the thing that stood out to me more than voice quality. I think it would have been better if it was designed and planned for an older audience.

This!! I've been trying to figure out what's been scratching at the back of my brain since watching Encanto.

Its something between this and just.... how similar the music sounds to some of Lin's other songs. It does not help now that I've seen tiktok's splicing Hamilton songs with Encanto songs and they are almost the same in some places.

*did like the movie though! It was fun, and I do like the songs on their own.

Yeah. I'm not a native speaker but I never have any issues usually. But in the Family Madrigal, especially towards the end, it all just turned to noise for me.

I don't really mind it because I don't really think the songs have a strong "song" factor to them; they very very narrative. So I'm glad the two best songs Dos Oruguitas and Colombia, Mi Encanto, are sung by singers and wish Dolores, whose tone I really loved, had a song or a bigger part in most. But yeah, "we don't talk about Bruno" is much better when the singers get to sing, like Felix, Pepa, and Dolores's voice actors

Different strokes and all that, but Mirabel's song was my favorite one and I've been listening to it over and over since watching the movie.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-14 02:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought the songs weren't very memorable when I watched it. And then I had them alternate being stuck in my head going on a week now. (Today is Dos Oruguitas day btw)

I didn't mind them being untrained. It made them more like real people to me.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-14 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I definitely loved the songs but didn't remember/get them stuck in my head at first. But then, like you, they got stuck very easily later.

Probably not that relevant, but here's a great take on the difference between pitch correction and autotune, and how literally every singer you have ever listened to (and liked or disliked) has been sujected to automated tuning in the form of pitch correction.
