I thought it was actually really faithful to the original, and the changes they made were generally either understandable or an improvement. There were some I didn't like, it's true, but on the whole I think it did a really good job. I was pleasantly surprised.

What were the changes?

I am kind of confused why they did a remake set in the same time period. Since we already had the original.

Still waiting for someone to actually elaborate on the changes, although I'm sure the question qill be answered by the time I come back.

I'm not familiar with the stage play and it's been a while since I've seen the old movie but here's some changes I've seen people talking about:

- Doc is replaced with his Puerto Rican widow Valentina, played by Rita Moreno
- Somewhere is sung by Valentina instead of a duet between Tony and Maria
- Maria and Tony are orphans or at least their parents are not present anywhere in the movie. Tony is staying with Valentina and Maria shares a flat with Anita (not 100% sure if Bernardo lives there too).
- Tony served jail time after almost killing a member of an Egyptian gang in a rumble and this is the reason he is trying to distance himself from the Jets
- Anybodys is trans coded
- Cool is before the rumble and it's a duet between Tony and Riff arguing about the gun Riff got as a backup for the rumble
- I Feel Pretty is after the rumble, like in the original stage play, but feels super jarring since there is no intermission
- Maria sings couple of lines from Tonight at the end instead of Somewhere since it was never their song in this remake

I don't know what the changes were in terms of plot or music, but the original had the glaring problem of all the Puerto Rican characters being except for one being played by white actors, and they all had to do fake accents and darken their skin lest they not seem "authentic" -- even Rita Moreno, the one *real Puerto Rican actor*, had to do this. I think that alone is a good reason for a remake. The remake won't stop the original from existing, but it's cringey enough nowadays that it can kinda (or heavily, depending on who you are) distract from everything that's great about the movie.

Right, but how is that a bad thing?

(Anonymous) 2022-01-18 11:25 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT I mean, how is more authentic casting a bad thing?

The 1961 movie is a remake too, from stage play to film. I don't see why another adaptation can't exists, especially if it means that I can watch a West Side Story movie without brownface.

Nobody said it can't exist? But some people may think it's superfluous. You are free to disagree.
But calling an adaption of a stage show a remake is a bit far-fetched.

Less of a stretch than you’d think, given the typical fan reactions to stage show adaptations. But if it helps you be less annoyed at the superfluity, you can call the new movie a revival instead of a remake.
