Writing thread

I know we only had one of these yesterday but I have a question

How would you write a relationship evolving from sex pollen induced lust to love?

I could see it opening doors to repressed feelings (e.g. a character thinking they don’t like them in that way, they’re just good friends, they admire them) and then after they have sex realising that no, they’re actually in love with them and then they have to deal with those feelings (obviously depends on the character as to what route that takes)

AYRT This is definitely a good option, thanks nonny!

Oof. I'm gonna be honest, nonny, I'm biased against sex pollen because it always smacks of stealing peoples' consent and rape just doesn't do it for me.

That being said, did they like each other beforehand? Were there circumstances that kept them from having the nerve to ask each other out?

AYRT I love it as a trope personally. Having said that, my intention is not to hand wave that aspect, but deal with it as part of the emotional resolution between them.

I'd probably have the victims of the pollen checking in with each other afterward. Y'know, that would be kind of a life-shaking event? So them making sure the other one was okay, treating them with respect and kindness. And that could lead to them bonding, having a few heart to hearts about other things... love slowly grows.

(I'm big on hurt/comfort and tenderness.)

Alternatively, if I wanted something messed up, I'd have them never talking about it, and the tension from avoiding that subject in their day-to-day could push various emotional moments.

Depends on how much drama you want, I guess.

AYRT I don't know if this is precisely what you mean, but the modern constantly-checking-in-on-eachothers-feelings is not my style, and I have yet to read a story that depicts that well. Both in an actually sounding like humans way, and a this makes for a good story way.

Your second description is what happens, the not talking pushing the tension one lol. They do however care deeply about each other, and it's at the centre of everything that happens afterwards, trying to protect each other from the fall out.

I like hurt/comfort and tenderness too. :)

My fave'd feel very guilty. So A (their POV) avoids the 2nd party B because they secretly loved B before pollen fiasco. Then they'll talk to someone who'll say that B loves them and to talk to them. A and B confess. Happy end.

Aww. That is a classic take. :)

The classic they already had feelings and now that they've fucked like bunnies on coke there's no reason to hide it anymore and/or the fumbling conversation they try to have about it afterwards results in spilling the beans.

Definitely a classic. :)

Some basic things to consider are: What was the characters' relationship like pre-pollen? Friends? Strangers? Casual acquaintances? Arch nemeses?

Were they both hit with it, or just one of them? If just one, did the other one know they were pollinated at the time?

Is sex pollen something either of them would have had on their radar before it happened? (i.e., are they in a universe where this sort of thing happens regularly? Or one where this sort of thing happens, but only to other people? Or is it like, NCIS: New Orleans?)

The answers to these kinds of questions really depend on your characters and on the type of story you want to write. The basic options are angst, fluff and porn, but you can mix and match those, depending on what you're going for.

All very good points. Thanks!
