AO3 users

Is there a way to "bump" a fic? There have been 2-3 fics fandoms I am in that are constantly on the new page despite being completed and no new chapters being added. One has been on page one for over 5 days.

I think you just delete the final chapter then reupload it. That makes the server think it has been updated.

That's annoying!

...This is something people do?

Ew. :/

So that's what's been happening! There's been fics I have been keeping track of and was so confused and disappointed when there wasn't actually a new chapter to read.

Does that delete comments left on the last chapter or do people not care?

I've seen fic that was done pop back up with no new chapters but assumed the author had to update the notes or make a small edit.

...Are there other fics being written in that fandom? Because like... the majority of page one in my fandom is my fics, and it's been that way for a year, not because I bump them but because other people write fics in that fandom maybe once or twice a year.

(I honestly wish it was more active and I'd get pushed down more often so I don't look like I'm trying to take over the fandom, hahah. :/)

It is MCU so yes.

Ohhhhh yeah. That would definitely be suspicious then. :/

Noticed this too in the Steve/Bucky tag some months ago. It was annoying as hell. I'm not checking lately, but wouldn't be surprised if it's still that tag.

When you edit a chapter, you can change the publication date. The info about it indicates it is meant for backdating. I haven't tried changing it on any fics, but I would assume you could change the date to the present.

You can edit the Date Published field.

But, unless it was the kind of sitch where you posted it early for an Exchange but it wasn't visible for a couple weeks 'til the Exchange opened so you're updating the date to match, it is Extremely Rude.

The sort of thing that I block fics for.

I know someone who did the opposite (buried their super popular fic so it's hard to find without going hunting) because they are (very slowly) working on a rewrite but didn't want to delete or orphan the original. Something to do with editing the upload date, I think?

What's the Fandom? I love seeing shit before a re-write.

Here's the whole behemoth, and the author posted the first five chapters of the rewrite last year. Dunno if it will ever all be posted/finished, although I hope it will.

The author has a bunch of chronic health issues I think. And iirc the archived version had also been tweaked and edited a bit before she decided she couldn't do it piecemeal and would have to do it again from scratch.

I'm not a good enough writer to do what she was initially aiming for with the original story, which was writing in a more flowery fairy tale style to reflect the narrator's bookish naivety and gradually making the tone more realistic as the character learned and grew.

I think the author could've pulled it off, though, if her health hadn't gotten in the way.

I've never published any fic longer than a couple pages or written more than a novella's worth of drawer fic, so I'm just impressed when someone whose work I like outwrites the whole of Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, length-wise.

nayrt, and I'm not familiar with this series, but I am envious of folks who can bang out hundreds of thousands of words on fic. I struggle cranking out 30-50k over similar periods of time or longer.

Re: AO3 users

(Anonymous) 2022-01-27 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT--yeah, I struggle to maintain focused on one story long enough to finish it, so I stick to vignettes and short stories, and don't even post all of those.

I think sometimes about posting unfinished stuff with a note saying "that's all folks" or similar, but I hate getting excited about where a fic is going and then it turns out the answer is "nowhere."

I'm okay with reading the fic I posted in the link because despite/because of the length I was more into it as a character study than for the plot. And the smut sometimes works as character study, too, although sometimes I'll skip it on rereading just because.

I've never heard of this as a thing people do but there were some fics that said they'd updated despite being up to a chapter I'd already read and knew I'd read. So I guess now I know why. At least it wasn't a glitch on Ao3's end and it's still working perfectly fine.

UGH. Dishonor on the cow of anyone who does this.
