ADHD question

I'm pretty sure I have ADHD, but I have no idea where to start looking for information on how to deal with it. Anyone have any suggestions?

Nah, I'll pass. I get distracted by squirrels too easy. I might crash my bike.

I second watching "How to ADHD" on YouTube. She helped me figure out how to deal with mine a lot.

If you have decent health insurance asking your GP might be a good route? I'm biased, cuz I've been going to the same dude for 20 years, cuz he's a sweetheart who LISTENS to me. If you have one of those you trust they can refer you to the right place, or at least the next step to getting medication if you want that.

Hey! I just started the process in the past year

r/ADHD's wiki has a lot of good resources. Disclaimer, it is still a subreddit, but it's a fairly inclusive one.

So my next set of tips are going to be veeeeery specific to the US, which may not help you:

If you have a regular therapist, talk to them about it. They may be able to do a preliminary assessment and/or help refer you to people who can do assessments. Some psychiatrists (and psychologists) do both assessments and medicine (or DBT, CBT, or ADHD coaching in general), but in my state, I had to get referred to get assessed and then find someone who specializes.

(Note: you can have your regular therapist and an ADHD specific therapist that you use mostly for ADHD related stuff. They just shouldn't really overlap too much, and you need to be open with both of them broadly about what topics you're covering with the other)

If you do get a large assessment, it can take a while. Also, be sure it is pre-authorized by your insurance, otherwise, you'll have to do a lot of back and forth with the billing department of your assessment group and the insurance to avoid paying a huge bill you should have never been charged. And that's assuming it's covered. Fuck the US Health system, honestly. Also, apparently, this may have just been a problem with the group that bought out the people my assessor worked under. He was great though.

So, the assessment itself can take a few hours. It depends. It involves some self-reporting (like, "does this statement apply to you a lot, a little, not at all" kind of thing) and some objective cognitive testing.

You will at some point be asked about how you acted as a kid, probably. This is because ADHD is a cognitive disorder and will show in some aspects in childhood. If you can, try to talk to parents/relatives/friends who knew you as a kid. People who were adults at the time, preferably.

If you're in college/university in the U.S., great news! You can take full advantage of your school's resources. Counseling, prescription management, the works.

I forgot the link. Here it is

I forgot to mention,

if you don't have a therapist, a typical route is to talk to your GP/main doctor about it and ask for a referral. Which is silly because, like, GPs don't specialize in cognitive or mental health. Don't be afraid to push. Your GP is NOT a specialist in this field, so even if they're like "eh, I don't think you have it" that is not for them to diagnose.

If you're not from the US and are thinking "but wait if you have to get a referral for insurance coverage and the easiest way is through your GP doesn't that mean that if your GP refuses you get stuck, even if temporarily? Which is a double whammy if you do have ADHD which deals a lot with executive dysfunction?" Yup. That's the USA.

Seconding How to ADHD and reddit sub /ADHD, but my recommendation is going to a therapist and get assested.
I was pretty convinced I had ADHD since I have ALL the symptoms, but turns out I have Bipolar Disorder, which can mimic and/or have comorbidity with ADHD, but the treatment and the cause is very different. Take care!
