Video Essayists you love

(Anonymous) 2022-02-11 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I know the other day we had people debating how much they did or didn't like Sarah Z and others, I wanted to hear who you enjoy, who you think is underrated and such :)

Folding Ideas blew up with his NFT video but I still want to shill him here - if you haven't watched his other stuff, I can only recommend it. One of the very few channels where I actually feel like I have learned something and become smarter from watching, not just absorbed someone's Opinion About A Thing. Also him tearing Doug Walker apart was art.

hbomberguy will always hold a special place in my heart because I was studying game design during the height of Gamergate and his videos made it all feel so much less overwhelming and frightening. His Donkey Kong stream also cracked my egg and y'know, I love his content. Sometimes his jokes might feel a bit tryhard and his media analysis a bit pretentious, but I don't mind that.

As for someone who's underrated, I'd suggest you check out Quinn Curio, she's incredibly funny. I haven't even seen Gotham or Riverdale but her videos on both still took me out.

to get the obvious out of the way, Jenny Nicholson

Be Kind Rewind is great, she mostly looks at Classic Hollywood through the lens of actresses and their careers.

Josh Snares mostly does shorter stuff about Doctor Who releases, but his longer essays on the missing episodes are FANTASTIC.

Wait in the Wings does these amazing videos about the behind the scenes of how musicals got to Broadway (or failed to get to Broadway in some cases). Try the Starlight Express one if you're looking for a good place to start.

Matt Baume is great - he mostly talks about queer representation throughout TV history, and he also has some similar stuff with movies.

Sideways is probably a given, but I love his tales on soundtracks.

There are some youtubers I really like in your list, so I am going to check other names out. Thank you!

These are all great!

I recently discovered CJ the X, whose videos are frenetic to say the least, but I think his analyses and ideas are really on point and he has a great sense of humor and also will shill for Miraculous Ladybug when you least expect it.

The first video I watched by CJ the X was their Coraline video and it was really good!

Mike's Mic's trilogy "An Appropriately Unhinged Recap of Pretty Little Liars" is a good time. It sparked some joy and I will never care about PLL I just love how much he cares.

Casually Comics is DELIGHTFUL in her coverage of superhero stuff.

NerdSync also talks about comics but typically in longer videos. He did a great series on the low cost cartoons Marvel put out in the 60s.

Ellie Dashwood is for all your Regency Romance needs.

Belinda Carr has neat thoughts about architecture.

How To Cook That debunks crappy clickbait cooking videos and it feels SO good to know it's mostly BS.

Nicque Marina does shorter videos about fandom stuff that I like a lot. Not really video essays but I can't *not* rec her.

Pandaredd is likewise most popular on tictok, and it shows, but he is carrying the batfam fandom ON HIS BACK.

Sideways talks good about music in movies and Todd In The Shadows speaks on pop music.

Swell Entertainment, Talor J. Williams, Patrick H William's, Quenton Reviews, Amanda the Jedi, Knitting Time With Willie, and Red Letter Media do the kind of essays/reviews that you think of when you hear the term "YouTube video essay."

But if you forget everything else remember this one thing: ContraPoints is smart and kind and puts way more effort into her aesthetic than I personally will ever deserve.

Going to list essayists I haven't seen listed yet!

cherry bepsi - I highly recc her video "The Psychological Horror of Gaslighting". She's so underrated! I think she deserves more views, love her arguments a lot of times, and she often has at least one point I've had to pause and think more deeply about
https://youtu.be/DLnt4ubOPr0

Broey Deschanel - I really loved their essay "Sex and the City: and the End of History". A beautiful look at a show with a lot of problems but also a critique and exploration of capitalism
https://youtu.be/mIbIcJHKnXM

Melina Pendulum (AKA Princess Weekes) - I've been rewatching her most recent video "Rape Revenge and Promising Young Woman| Realism vs Catharsis" every day
https://youtu.be/PVd3xJbJxkw

Macabre Storytelling - I watched his Game of Thrones videos where he talked about how he would fix Game of Thrones. Stuck around because he does a lot of videos on writing and I am always a fan of a fan of The Sopranos (especially if they're writers). I fucking LOVE his video "The Green Knight: Story Vs Plot"
https://youtu.be/Ag2CNqVyJdc

BLACK FEMININITY TV - I love her commitment to boosting up Black talent and Black media. Her most recent video was fantastic "The WORST Wax Figures of Black Celebrities Ever Made". Funny and informative! Learned a lot about Wax Figure Museums
https://youtu.be/GUhQAfZoOMI

Xiran Jay Zhao - I just began watching her videos and I LOVE her! She approaches the topics she covers with so much nuance, and she covers a lot of Chinese histories I didn't know of. Really loved her "China's Forgotten Warrior Queen - Fu Hao" video!
https://youtu.be/y5IvpfsPdyo

Intelexual Media - I feel like I've recced Lexi's channel before and I've recced her "A Brief History of America Hating Sex Workers" video before too but I really love her channel and her commitment to her research
https://youtu.be/PPNbYtv0Gpo

Also Renegade Cut? Has anyone mentioned Leon's channel? I've been a really long time fan of Renegade Cut, and though his videos are less pop culture heavy now I still love his essays.

ladyknightthebrave does long-form vids about her media interests

dr. octavia cox on Austen or other classical lit including poetry. it's academic form.

kennie j.d (technically not an essayist, but she sometimes does get in depth about movies)

todd in the shadows his series on trainwreckords and the madonna movies were very interesting

script sleuth, Just Write, Now You See It, Lessons from the Screenplay, Say Something Media all do short vids about screenwriting, basic and otherwise

Pop Culture Detective does a lot of essays about toxic masculinity that are really insightful

Patrick (H) Willem does a ton of seriously interesting videos about movies

Maggie Mae Fish is just wonderful honestly. Her Synder series is a must.
Defunctland! Everything about his topics are fascinating to me lol.

in deep greek, why create, the disputed lands, secrets of the citadel, quinn's ideas, alt shift x all did game of thrones, many have moved onto other sci-fi

history buff does essays about the history in a lot of movies.

kat blaque talks about her trans experience and other queer culture topics.

I don't watch video essayists per se, but I have one video essay I stumbled on that I return to every once and a while because it's really good.

Bringing Back What's Stolen by Innuendo Studios - An essay series about feminism in Mad Max Fury Road (https://youtu.be/wmR8A1a8shk)

Some that I like that I haven’t seen mentioned are Yhara Zhayd, Thought Slime, and Jessie Gender. Jessie talks about Star Trek a lot as well as makes video essays, so I don’t would recommend those to the people here that like Star Trek.

There might be more, so I’ll add them later if I think of them.
