The ancient ereader I used for fic is dead. Can anyone recommend one? I just want a basic one with no back-light that I can transfer mobile and epub files to via USB.

I used a 1st gen Nook for years until I decided I wanted something with a bigger screen and a backlight, then I switched to Kobo Forma. That sounds like it's more than you're looking for, but it's been fantastic to me-- I keep the backlight dialed down to 2-3% at night so I can read in bed and don't use it at all during the day, and I use calibre to manage all my files.

If you don't mind branching away from the Kindle/Nook staples, you might check out what Kobo has to offer.

My sister recently gave me her rather old Kindle, which I have no interest in using. I'd be happy to send it along to you, if you thought you'd like it.

That is incredibly kind of you, thanks! I-m in Europe but I'd be happy to pay the postage. I don't have a dw account but I could email you?

My mental health has tanked it today and as a result I think I've cut some people out of my life that I think I'm going to regret. Specifically my brother.

Several bad things have happened to me in the last two years. My brother is a toxic positivity type and I am definitely not. I told him recently that I found it difficult when he tried to put a positive spin on everything when he asked how things were going. Just an acknowledging 'gee that sucks' would have been enough. Apparently this makes me a bitch, because I'm not grateful.

I'm so tired of family drama. So tonight I deleted him off social media and blocked his number. And now it feels like too much and I've made a mistake.

That sucks and I'm sorry you're in that situation, nonny. Brain problems are awful to have to deal with. It sucks. Even if it sucks right now, it doesn't sound like it's the kind of problem that's fundamentally irreparable. Family is family and time can heal a lot of things. It still completely and totally sucks in the moment though.

Yeah, there's putting stuff in perspective but being constantly invalidated is extremely exhausting. I had a 'friend' like that and I just learned to keep my distance and never share anything with them.

Sometimes you just need a break from tiring people.

Re: Vent thread

(Anonymous) 2022-02-22 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry you're going through that. I don't think that it is a mistake, though, because it hasn't come out of nowhere, and you tried to talk about things first. It sounds like you need a break, and you don't have to think of it as something permanent if that's not what you want right now. Just take the time to see how you feel, and you can decide what you might be comfortable with in terms of your relationship later. All the best with it, anon.

I'll vent some. On Friday I had to make a short but early morning appointment. I figured I could stop for a latte and pastry on the way to work after and still get in early, which would mean I could leave early!

...cue accident on the freeway which brought traffic to a crawl and I wound up getting to work the same time as normal. There was nothing stopping me from going to the cafe across the street (I don't have the kind of job where I gave to punch in at a precise time) but I was no longer in the mood. It threw my whole day off and I was mad at myself for letting it get to me like that.

I, too, have generally been in a shit mood these last couple of weeks. I'm sure some of it is preparing for that time of the month... but I think in general, I'm just sick to shit of everything right now. World is shit, I can't buy a house, I can't support myself in a job I'd love to have, I have to have some difficult conversations with people whom I don't know whether to slap silly and just bail or seriously patiently sit down with them and believe in them no matter what, I don't know how to make any other friends I feel safe around, and my attempts to get in better shape keep getting thwarted by my dumb ass. But I honestly hate myself for being so goddamned short-tempered lately, like fucking psychotic rage I-will-put-a-fucking-ancient-curse-of-my-people-on-you kind of short-tempered. I know I need to move around more but I'm in too much of a shit mood that I can't bring myself to do anything. I can only take comfort in the fact that I don't have roommates or pets, though I'm sure my neighbors don't like me very much right now. I have no idea how much they hear, but shit echoes in my stupid apartment even when I try to stifle shit and I hate it.

tl;dr am a giant rage monster and don't like myself right now

I'm a bit sad because 2 is my favourite number and I have absolutely nothing special planned for the 22nd. Weekday and the big C sabotaging any attempt and all. I had been looking forward to this date because I'll never get this many 2s in a date in my lifetime and now it'll just be another day. This isn't even mentioning that my life isn't anywhere near the place I imagined it to be years ago when thinking about this day.

It's not a huge deal and I shouldn't have put such expectations on a random day like this but I'm still a little bummed.

I just ranted about this the other day, but I'm still so fumingly angry about yet another online seed retailer turning out to be and advertising that they're owned by white supremacist dickwads.

First rareseeds/Baker Creek backing the Bundy family militia and posting puff piece interviews with Cliven Bundy from when he was in jail and acting completely shocked and offended that people got mad.

And now JL Hudson posting "time to party until all governments fall" and "this is like the fall of the Berlin Wall" about the fucking white supremacist antivax trucker convoy.

Maybe I should give up on trying to grow weird rare flowers and fruit and veggies and just stick to roses or something. But it's one of my only non-fandom hyperfixations, and also my brain won't let me stop hyperfixating on my hobbies just because one is shared by racist shitheads.

But I'm also not about to give them money unless they start apologizing.

And maybe start donating lots of money to non-shitty charity drives. I see you, Baker Creek, running "charity" drives to ship bibles and missionaries to the aftermath of natural disasters, you predatory proselytizing bastards.

If I'm really thorough in boycotting them, I won't be able to buy from many nurseries either; my two favorite local ones that propagate some of their own plants buy seed from both Baker Creek and JL Hudson, and mail order rare plant nurseries buy seed from JL Hudson, too.

I started seeing posts about Rareseeds being shitty when the Bundy interviews went up, but I haven't seen anyone saying anything about JL Hudson, maybe because they're not primarily a fruit and veggie seed seller and their catalog isn't on magazine racks at Whole Foods and natural food stores like the Rareseeds Whole Seed Catalog.

I have zero social media presence and the garden store review sites and Yelp will delete reviews that are left because of a business' political leanings. I just wish there was a way to put pressure on them to stop being shitty, because a lot of the alternatives are owned by Bayer/Monsanto/etc.

I've written idek how many drafts of an angry email, but an email campaign by one person is useless.

Oh well, at least Native Seed Search will almost certainly never post racist dipshittery, and they do great work besides.

But their inventory is kind of limited for my interests since I don't only want to grow desert-adapted vegetables.

And Seed Savers Exchange is mostly focused on veggies too.

Grr. White supremacists ruin everything.

Our politics is always getting from bad to worse. And it's one of those days when it's really bad. So of course twitter is being anxious hellscape. It's predictable, but most of my friends are on twitter, so I am alternate between trying not to look and feeling awfully lonely. I wish I was in the mountains not hearing how my country is being awful yet again and not thinking how I am getting even poorer. And not reading cold takes by westerners how I am evil incarnated just by the fact I was born

"This character from an ancient legend is immortal and portrayed as an adult in our canon's iteration of him, but in the original legend and most other iterations he's immortal and looks like a young child, so shame on you for shipping (our canon's adult-looking version of) him with another immortal adult-looking character, you're disgusting and you should have known better, even if our fandom's version of him is the only one you've ever heard of and you literally have no way of knowing he looks ten in most versions. Also, here's a statement from one of the members of the writing team saying our canon is not for proshippers, in those exact words."

I HAVE no words.

Musicals You've Listened to, But Never Seen?

(Anonymous) 2022-02-22 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
I've been listening to random playlists and ended up listening to Hadestown and loved it. Its not the only musical where I've just heard the soundtrack, but I was wondering if anyone else did it too and what musicals did they like?

Re: Musicals You've Listened to, But Never Seen?

(Anonymous) 2022-02-22 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
I think every musical I've actually seen I'd first listened to and liked. One of my favourites that I'll probably never have the chance to see is Notre Dame de Paris. I keep hearing good things about Hadestown, but I haven't actually listened to it yet. I really should!

Re: Musicals You've Listened to, But Never Seen?

(Anonymous) 2022-02-22 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
Ha ha I am anon who dislikes plot of Hadestown greatly. (no, Orpheus' work being great do not make Eurydice awful traitor who traits no matter what fans are telling me ffs), but damn music is good.

I think a lot of the times people do listen just for soundtracks, musicals being not really accessible as they are.
