the game....has a map though...? did you mean minimap op? bc there is a very detailed map of the overworld you can access through the simple press of a button, with waymarker points and markers you can put all over it at your leisure

i feel like people forget that minimaps are actually a relatively recent concept. the first game i remember playing that had a minimap was star ocean 4 and iirc that was 2009 or 2010?

(Anonymous) 2022-03-10 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Eh? Plenty of RPGs had them in the 90s. I remember Suikoden had a minimap you could improve by getting a mapmaker.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-10 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
alas the suikoden games were ones i never played because they were too expensive and hard to find! i don't remember any of the other games i played in the 90s having them, though. some of them had maps but they were the kind that you had to open through the game's menu, not like the little everpresent one up in the corner of the screen.

Pretty sure games like Final Fantasy 6, and Xenogears had them too. Not necessarily when you were in a dungeon, but definitely on the overworld.

Between this (yesss let me mark the map how I want to) and the above comment about being able to accidentally stumble across something 20 levels higher than your character... this kinda sounds like a game I would enjoy. I mean in old-school games that had weird secrets and glitches that let you access high-level difficulty areas early, or random encounters with something you were not supposed to be able to beat till the endgame, I always at least gave it a shot. Or if I stumbled into it and realized I was outclassed, I'd just be like "...whoooaaaaa hahaahahha wow, that was hilarious!"

(Yes I realize that different people enjoy different things about games and the possibility of randomly getting wiped is not a plus for many people.)

Man, memories of beating the Midgar Zolom in disc 1 of FFVII and not realizing until much later that you... weren't actually supposed to kill it then and that I'd somehow pulled off something EXTREMELY difficult, LOL.

Hahahaha, yes. And even back in FF1, there was Warmech.

I am remembering a lot of older games where I would be going through a dungeon quite easily and then suddenly a battle begins and OH CRAP RUN RUN RUN RUN COME ON RUN CRAP LOL. Or in later games you would actually have to physically run away from the things. Like the dinos in the desert in FFXII, or the entites. You just had to sneak around and hope they didn't notice you...

And then there was that thing in Suikoden 2 where you could push open a gate that you weren't supposed to go through until more than halfway through the game. I survived one random overworld battle with one person left standing, and they leveled up like 20 times...

Oh man I LOVED moments like that, where you accidentally got into a fight that was way above your level but you tried your best to stay alive anyway and failed and then laughed about how dumb you were! "Oh no oh no oh no IT'S STILL CHASING ME OH NO"
pantswarrior: Basch says ":(" (basch)

[personal profile] pantswarrior 2022-03-10 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
Oh gosh yes, I just remembered my second time through FFXII when I first realized you could go into Nabudis earlier than I thought, so I decided to give it a shot, go in there and get the zodiac spear really early...

...I did it, but the entire trip out was just Basch with a bunch of protective buffs, running through the ruins as fast as he could with a bunch of Baknamy on his heels and more joining in along the way, because everyone else was already dead. The whole time I was just cracking up because poor Basch, he has already been through so much and does not deserve this... :D

I did something similar in my early days of FFXIV... I went into the North Shroud and was happily killing the level 8 enemies near the map entrance, and then I wandered a little too far away and ran into the level 35 enemies and uh. They're all automatically aggo. :D

Many thanks were said for the existence of Sprint that day, LOL.

Oh god I remember seeing one of those balls of light (I think they were elemental that only appeared in certain types of weather) and going up to it out of curiosity. Zapped to death in seconds.

Yes, the entites! I remember many times when my ex and I would be exploring some area of the map and we would load a new section and see one of those things roaming around ahead and "...okay we'll come back later." :D

Man, I love Matsuno's games for stuff like that. In Vagrant Story there is an enemy that doesn't look like a game-ender (though incredibly creepy) and in fact looks like another enemy you encounter fairly early - but has an instant-death spell. And, uh, you're a party of one. "Oh it's just a Quicksilver... wait no it's not, CRAP CRAP CRAP KILL IT FAST."

(Anonymous) 2022-03-10 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)
... Oh god I think I remember that. It's been so long but some things just stick haha

... I want an HD remake damn it.
pantswarrior: The characters of Vagrant Story don't understand pants. (vs)

I voice my plea every time Square-Enix is trending on Twitter, hahaha. :D (Even just a remaster like Legend of Mana would be fine, please!)

OP

(Anonymous) 2022-03-10 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Oh. Then why were those people on Twitter refusing to buy it because they said it doesn’t have a map?

Lotta dumbasses on Twitter

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2022-03-10 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
Dumbasses, and people who are lazy and want their hand held through games and want to never die or mess up at all. What they basically want is a Let's Play where they press a few buttons rather than, you know, an actual game.

...So you really did not even touch the game at all before submitting this secret, huh
