never discount the stress but honestly yeah it happens to all of us. I went from being able to easily ignore dumb things to being mad that they're somewhere near me as I aged, well before recession and pandemic stress.

I think some of it is retroactive self-shaming, like you remember being that young and stupid and wishing they knew what you know now, but they're young and haven't experienced what you have so they can't know better yet. You're mad that you feel shame that you were exactly that young and dumb and did dumb things at that age, so you try to push it off by wishing the kids would grow up and get on your level already. Happens to the best of us. Just pour yourself a drink of choice and be mad in private, don't take it out on them.

I'm the opposite. I couldn't stand most stupid shit people did when I was younger. I've mostly mellowed out, and as long as being aren't being shitty (as in, doxxing, harassing and threatening others), I tend to let a lot of things go.

For me, probably a little of both. As i've gotten older, i realize i have zero patience for pretty much...anything.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-16 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
When I was a 90s teen in fandom, back when fandom skewed older (and I dont think this was just my perception) I often felt the adults were being too silly (not that I never did anything silly but I had the excuse of being young!) Over time I mellowed on the silliness of adults, but have become less tolerant of the silliness of teens, which I guess is me getting old and cranky. Still, I think there's something in fandom culture and online culture these days that allows for more of the kind of silliness that makes me cringe - things like social media making it possible for fans to pester actors and creators so much, or people putting up fewer boundaries between their real identities and online fannish lives. So much more of my youthful fannishness was behind an anonymous screen name, gone from the internet, or was offline to begin with. I also feel like the adults in fandom are less silly than they used to be. (Maybe a generational thing, as yesterday's teens are today's adults?) I don't really know what I'm trying to say here. Just rambling.

Could be either or both.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-16 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe you just hit your tipping points, which can be related to both as it has to do with how much time you've spent in fandom and your tolerance levels.

Like, the first 91 times someone insists that the show/movie was totally going to have these two characters get together except the studio got scared, you roll your eyes and move on, but the 92nd time, you start blocking tags and/or people.

Or the first 437 times someone spells a prominent character's name wrong in multiple places are somewhat annoying, you just sigh and tolerate it while reading, but the 438th time, you nope out and just barely refrain from a diatribe in the comments - IT'S SPELLED RIGHT IN THE TAGS!!! WHY CAN'T YOU SPELL IT RIGHT EVERYWHERE??!!?

Or the first 1,064 times someone 'headcanons' something about a character that is directly contradicted by canon, you shrug because whatever, but the 1,065th time, you make a secret here and then go out of your way to avoid anyone with that 'headcanon.

I think I'm mostly just baffled at whatever younger folks are doing/saying within their fandoms (people are sus? Uh, sure? Everything is so gender? Is that a good thing? I think it's a good thing. Hell, it took me years before I figured out what the fuck "yeet" meant.) But I think that's common. We're getting older and we're not really gonna get it much like adults didn't when we were younger. It's that Grandpa Simpson "I used to be with it" dialogue.

And I think that's fine. Let them have their fun, I'll just be over here in my own corner having my own, older adult fun. Sorry it's been driving you up the wall though, OP.

I'm 31, and I've basically stopped participating in fandom apart from writing/publishing my own fics and talking 2 or 3 friends. (I'll read a fic if it comes recommended, but I've gotten back into books more in the past year.) I just don't have the emotional bandwidth I did when I started hanging out in fannish spaces. :P

I think it's part inevitability with age, but younger fans do a lot of things I know would have annoyed me when I was that young. The surrealness of the memes they use now and the "ironic insults" on fanworks such as "I hate you, delete this immediately" to say something moved you. I preferred it when we said "This gives me all the feels!" followed by keysmashing. That's considered cringe now, but it's not WORSE than what kids currently do. It's just out of fashion.

A little of both. I find myself finding "shipping, LOL so random, RPing in the comments" kind of annoying the older I get, but I tolerate that over the "everything is problematic, sus bussin' yeet, cancel this" kids nowadays days seem to be doing.

I am blocking like my life depends on it. It helps, but only so much.
I just wish that there were more places for older adult fans. F!S is fun and all, but I am out of tune with everyone's timezones, you can't really hold a conversation just from yesterday, it's frustrating.
And younger fans are just boring and annoying most of the time. It's natural but still I am frustrated about it

I've gotten so much less patient with bullshit. Block her, block him, block you, block me, let's fucking GO.

I'm having a great time though.

Seeing all the responses here (which I think for the most part are fairly chill), I'm just curious as to how the next gen of fans will be and how those youths of today's fandom will look back on what their current fandom will be when they reach fandom "old". What will the pervasive culture be? Will they cringe at their attitudes? Etc. Etc.

Thank you, secret-maker! (And A+ picking an image from the last scene I had hope for his character!)

Lost Tomb is very confusing to try to watch. The cast (mostly) changes for each drama. The dramas usually only vaguely follow the books they're based on and not only aren't released in chronological order but often pull random scenes from other books and include characters from later volumes. There's also the fact some of the books aren't finished and there are some side stories, prequels and sequels (some of which aren't finished). It's great! I love it but, yeah, it's confusing.

This guide might be helpful, but honestly, it's never going to make perfect sense. And here is a character guide (although not complete, it doesn't include Lost Tomb 2.5) with descriptions and pictures of the actors for the characters that show up in multiple dramas (it is spoilery though). There's also no need to watch all the dramas if one isn't doing it for you skip to another. Everyone has their own favorite version of the characters and that's okay. Enjoy the chaos and welcome to the fandom! :)

Aw Aaron and Claire! I've shilled them on here before because his "Don't worry about it!" approach to cooking has helped my depressed anxious ass so much. I'm not a good cook so I never know when I can substitute or leave out - so their channel is just perfect for me.
