Fanservice armor that makes characters look sexy is great and I'm a fan of it but it's shitty when fanservice armor is exclusively a thing for female characters, and it's shitty when wearing fanservice armor and looking sexy is the primary contribution of female characters to the plot. And tbh I think these are all really well established ideas at this point.

That's not a good analogy. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is a vampire AU of the real life Lincoln. That isn't what Zhao is doing, she's taking the names of historical figures and applying them to her original characters.

What is everyone doing?

I will be pondering career choices. And being annoyed at my little sister who is getting a divorce and going through a midlife crisis.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Abe Lincoln in Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter is supposed to be the historical Abe Lincoln who served as the 16th president, no? So that's not the same thing.

DA

That'd be a hilarious thing to lampshade, though. All the historic characters recognizing the ones that came before them and assuming the OC is the real Elizabeth Tudor due to the name, and she's like "er yeah totally ha ha" and misadventures happen

wouldn't bother me in the least tbh

I am going to be sleeping, and zoning out, and sleeping more. It has been a looooooooooong, long week.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-19 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
... I'm confused as to why you think they would be difficult to tell apart.

I'm convinced that the reason JK Rowling is so transphobic is because she is a heavily closeted transman, and she is just angry that everyone else is transitioning just fine while she has trapped himself in his closet. It is the only thing that makes sense at this point.

Still taking it easy because of my back. And catching up on sleep.

Thinking of watching some Star Wars movies. Definitely Rogue One and maybe the OT too.

I don't care if it is a fandom heresy, I still recommend starting reading Pratchett's Discworld series with The Colour of Magic. It is still my favourite of his books. But I also unironically enjoy the flavour of heroic fantasy he was riffing on too.

The examples she cites are basically OCs with the names of historical figures. The Sanzang in JTTW is nothing like the historical figure Xuanzang, but is without a single doubt based entirely on his existence.

I'm really glad that Nat is gone from Chicago Med, as much as I liked her. Will is suddenly a likeable character. And he plays off the new character so much better. And honestly, I don't really miss her? The show is just more enjoyable without her.

The difference is that Jaws 3-D is hilariously stupid and Jaws: The Revenge is just regular-type.

That's the first book. Why is starting with the first book fandom heresy?

I think the Robocop live-action spin off show brought something more to the table than either of the two offical movie sequels, or the reboot. It really dug into Murphy's family life, and how he could make connections with other people while still being Robocop. The addition of Diana Powers to the Robocop mythos was a good one too.

+1
I really don't mind a female character wearing stupid bikini armor shit as long as it's known that SHE loves wearing it. Sadly we don't tend to get that unless it's Bayonetta.

The live-action Popeye movie, with Robin Williams, is a work of comedic genius.

There, I said it.

ah but consider: a novel like secret OP described, but the characters are "really" their historical selves, with no explanation given as to why they are in this situation. Provided the characterization was historically accurate, I would read that so much

I think at the end of the day, it's still a discussion worth having.
I do appreciate the fan service-y aesthetics! As a woman with curves and as a bi woman, in terms of selling the fantasy of a cool well-rounded character who is also very sexy, I enjoy it! But, I am also very much aware of the harms that come with unreal expectations this brings on IRL women, the concerns over realism and giving better/more realistic representation in media, and in a broader sense, why do we have such an obsession over women's bodies (and policing it), even fictional women?

It is, as someone else said upthread, a complicated thing.

I like the female Thor storyline in the comics, I'm annoyed they are going there in the movies. I just really don't like Natalie Portman as an actress. She's boring and flat and really overrated. I was happy Jane was gone, and I wish they weren't bringing her back.

I think bringing RTD back was the worst possible thing they could do. Part of it is that it is moving backwards. But really, I'm mostly still angry and bitter about how he wrote Donna's ending.

Fandom: The Lost Tomb series

I think one of the (many) reasons Granny Huo is so pettily bitchy to Wu Xie is that his grandad, 'Old Dog' Wu, stole her girlfriend back in the day.
