I had to stop and think about what was problematic before I remembered one's a high schooler and the other is of an unspecified (at least as far as I've watched) age.

Also, Gojo is his legal guardian since Megumi was 6ish.

AYRT ah, yeah I am only like 4 episodes in and haven't read the manga, but that would do it haha.

Gojo is specifically stated to be 28!

Reading that Gojo was 28 made me feel some type of way since usually I get all hot for characters who are older than me (I'm 29 -- was 28 when the anime started). I couldn't tell if it's that I always see myself as younger or that I usually prefer the older dudes. He's still fine as hell 10/10 would try.

Yeah, I think the "was Megumi's legal guardian since he was a kid" and "is implied to have basically paid off his blood family to keep him away from them (which is a good thing)" and "killed his dad because the guy almost succeeded in killing him first" are very much the bigger issues but the age gap is pretty big as well. I think I just don't care about the gap because idk, Megumi is old enough to fight, kill and be killed, he's old enough to consent imo.

I think that the age gap in this particular pairing is not so off putting because of the dynamic between the two. Megumi externally seems like the more mature one, while Gojo is a little shit most of the time, so you can really forget that he's supposed to be the responsible adult in the couple.

Just a question because I'm curious and I don't see the pairing myself (I can see the appeal), but I know it's huge: what do you personally like about the ship? Do you usually like pairings like this (age gap, mentor/students etc) or is it an exception?

Hmmm I think what I like about this ship is, among others, kinda based on what you already wrote - the way that despite the age gap, their whole dynamic is actually the reverse of what would usually be expected from the age gap and mentor/student situation.
I have shipped mentor/student ships before but I wouldn't say it's something I actively seek out or would consider a particular "kink".
I think I often like the "one is a little shit and the other is a stoic iceberg who pretends to be annoyed but is actually fond of the other" shipping dynamic though.

That and I think their general backstory is kinda interesting and I do enjoy fic in which the whole "they are kinda family, whoops, no this is turning into something different" conflict is present. Plus you have the whole "Megumi is kinda destined to grow up to be the only person who could measure up to Gojo's OPness" thing which I find... weirdly romantic? Idk, Gojo, for all his happy-go-lucky attitude has the "it's lonely at the top" trope down to a t and the thought of him actually hoping for someone else to be on his level is right up my alley, platonically or romantically.

The it's lonely at the top trope is part of the appeal of Sukuna/Megumi for some people, but it makes ever more sense with Gojo.

Gojo even says this to him (chapter 117 iirc)- something about the last time there were both a limitless/six eyes user and a ten shadows user at the same time, they ended up killing each other - as a way to imply "you are stronger than you think" I believe.
And yeah, while I don't personally ship it, I can totally get Sukuna/Megumi as well based on that. They also have some really cool doujinshi haha

Sukuna/Megumi have the best doujinshi in jjk IMHO. I don't ship them because... I don't. In the past that ship'd be up in my alley, but somehow it didn't really click with me. I just really really envy all their beautiful angsty doujinshi.

Megumi being old enough to fight and kill in a setting where people are frequently trained for that kind of thing starting relatively young doesn’t really mean Megumi is suddenly able to consent if he’s still underaged. That’s not really how it works. That’s like saying the same thing about Naruto pre-timeskip. Same with Megumi being mature for his age in looks or demeanor.

Don’t get me wrong though, all that is just if you reply real world logic to this and treat these characters like they’re real though. Megumi isn’t real, and you aren’t doing anything wrong by shipping him with Gojo, not matter what antis say. So you don’t really need to justify why you think it’s okay to shop FushiGo, because it just is okay. I’m more of a fan of FushiIta/ItaFushi, but I like Gojo with both Megumi and Yuji too, especially if Gojo bottoms.

I get what you mean but he is also able to legally consent both in the country the story takes place in AND in the country I live in so that's generally a non-issue for me. I just always think it's a weird double standard (that is, in my experience, very American) that violence and murder = totally okay but anything even remotely sexual = evilbadwrong protect the children.

That’s not completely true that’s it’s totally legal for an adult to date a minor if they’re over 13 in all of Japan, but it’s not completely untrue either. It is still frowned upon even in Japan for an adult more than 10 years of age to date a minor, but it’s definitely only truly illegal across all prefectures if they’re under 13. On the surface. For instance, at one point(and possibly still a thing) in Tokyo there’s something called the Youth Protection Act that considers anyone under 18 a minor, and on paper prohibits adults from dating over 18 from dating anyone under 18. It doesn’t seem to be enforced strictly though, which is why I say it’s prohibited on paper. It’s all very complicated, and I’m not going to pretend I understand all of it completely, but here’s some articles if you’re interested, because they can explain things better than I can(although some of them may be outdated at this point, because legal matters change all the time):

Either way, I still think that real life age of consent laws shouldn’t affect fic and fanart, so it should really be a non-issue if someone ships Megumi and Gojo. Keyword being should. But we all know how the moral brigade and their harassment campaigns work by now, unfortunately.

And I could not agree more about the double standard between violence and sex! And it is indeed a predominantly American double standard. It’s pretty stupid to think one is perfectly fine and the other is immoral.

I am aware of all this (did some courses on Japanese law in uni and dear lord yeah, it's complicated) but maybe someone else might find these links interesting so thanks for you effort! The whole "Japanese people are all pedos and perverts because AoC is 13" gets kinda old (and feels kinda racist a lot of the times) so it's nice to see other people are aware that there is a whole lot of nuance there.

I mean, Megumi's... 16ish at the start of the series I think and I have no illusions about teenagers being some sexless pure creatures so age of consent or not, I think the morality of the Jujutsu-world as is is pretty wishy washy about a lot of things so I feel like it would be regarded as not too big of a deal in-universe (though I don't mind that being tackled in fic either). And really, who could say no to something Gojo wants? He's kinda untouchable (literally, too) - which actually is the reason I don't love him as a dominant top because that really looks a bit too much like coercion to me and that's not really my thing (not knocking anybody who liked that though. Fictional people and all.).

Personally, I've seen a lot of GoFushi with Megumi still much younger than the start of the series and... yeah, that's not for me but it also doesn't bother me much because, again, fictional people. I just feel like the whole "bad touch Gojo" (which appears to be the tag of choice for those stories) thing is wildly OOC.

Oh for sure, teenagers are definitely not sexless at all, and I wonder about people who think they are. Like, have they met teenagers? Haven’t they been a teenager? And 16 is the age of consent in many places anyways, so it’s much more in the realm of acceptability. I should have thought of that before I made my first comment, but I’m kinda dumb and forgot lol.

And I do agree that I personally don’t like Gojo as a top for similar reasons. It does feel like coercion, and that’s not my thing for this type of relationship. If it’s a relationship that’s not supposed to be positive, sure, I’m fine with that. Although I personally don’t have too much of those as my OTPs, because I’m kind of a sap when it comes to my favorite relationships, JJK ships included. So I like positive and loving relationships when it comes to Gojo. And I also agree with other anons in that I think Gojo feels more like a bratty bottom anyways, so that’s another main reason I would prefer FushiGo haha!

And I’m honestly sick of “bad touch Gojo” too. I don’t mind people writing it, of course, but I hate how it’s practically become fanon to so many people. Because it’s totally OOC.

Nah, I mean, even if 16 is the age of consent, I totally get why someone might be not entirely comfortable about a 16 year old being in a relationship with a 28 year old so even if it is legal, I get some might have issues with it.
And yeah, agreed on all accounts. I filter it out most of the time but not everyone tags this as "bad touch Gojo" so plenty get through still...
