I used to be an anti.

Maybe not a "true" anti in the sense that someone repeatedly harasses or doxxes folks and sends threats over writing pairings they personally find gross. But as a much younger participant in fandom, for a period of several months, I was an abrasive little shit to anyone who wrote things I considered thoughtless trash and/or wildly inconsistent with canons. A proto-anti, if you will. I didn't keep it to private spaces where I snarked with friends, I actually went around flaming folks in comments. (Writing stories for fandoms that literally have no story/characters? OMG! Why are you wasting everyone's time?! Two people together in the series that you broke apart without explanation, then paired with other people they hate? And one of them is a kid?! How dare you?! REEEE!)

(Also, ha, remember when flaming meant leaving mean comments for folks?)

I even got it in my sad little head that I could CHANGE! THE WORLD! OF FANDOM! if I could JUST! OPEN PEOPLE'S EYES! To the importance of QUALITY WRITING!

Spoiler: that hilarious little crusade didn't end well. I learned pretty quickly that 1) nobody gives a fuck, 2) people are just having fun with fictional settings, and 3) in a place where there are literally zero consequences for having such fun, that made me the bad guy. I mean, how would I like it if I was minding my own business, and some asshole decided they had a say in it? It was a humbling lesson to learn, but one I don't recommend learning through the same route I did.

So I say, if you're an anti: Seriously, just stop. You don't have to justify why you hate something in fandom for any reason (least of all: XYZ is immoral!). It's your right to hate it. It's not your right to hurt real people over something fictional. It's fiction, not a gateway drug to deplorable behavior IRL. Criticize it elsewhere if you must. But don't pretend you're some heroic woke activist for shitting in someone's sandbox.

To the rest of fandom: I apologize for having my head up my ass, and for trying to ruin your fun. My behavior was unacceptable and I don't have an excuse. Since then, I've learned to chill out and click on back buttons more.

Apology accepted.
Now someone tell this to the Call Me By Your Name/Armie Hammer antis.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-27 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
Call Me by Your Name antis, I get what you mean. There was a whole thing about that here a couple of months ago, in fact.

But what do you mean Armie Hammer antis? Most negative things I’ve seen about him are genuinely just reacting to what a terrible person he is, and frustration that there’s no way he won’t get away scot free, not anti behavior. I’m not going to pretend I’ve seen everything in this regard though, I only knew about most of the story and reactions through F!S, because I never followed Hammer very closely before. So I genuinely want to know what you’re talking about.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-27 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Depends on what you believe about the whole thing.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-27 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
are you an Armie Hammer truther

Okay.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-27 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Criticism of a movie and actor who's done some wack-ass shit isn't 'anti' behavior anon, it's people having an opinion you don't like.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-27 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh noes. A troll.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-28 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
There’s nothing troll-like about anyone who’s responded to you, you just don’t have any actual arguments or credibility.

Sounds like you were just a kid, lol. This is kind of cute actually.

OP

(Anonymous) 2022-04-27 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
I was definitely young but I wouldn't call myself a kid. The maturity level at the time though, sure.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-27 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, people don't use flaming like that anymore? What do people say now?

(Anonymous) 2022-04-27 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Well, they might in some places, but I haven't heard it used that way in well over a decade. I've been more likely to hear "bash" or "attack" or other similar things.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-27 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
TBH to me "flaming" is a fairly specific thing & there just aren't that many places anymore where that very particular kind of vituperative attacking posting style is seen as an accepted, normal part of Internet discourse.

Not that conversations are necessarily less toxic; arguably more so, just in a different mode.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-27 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I would say that most antis are either a) young fans who are encountering things outside of the "safe/curated" bubble for the first time and haven't yet learned that no, AO3 is not just like the teen section in their local library (and that's gonna have some pretty dark stuff too) and have equated that squirmy squick feeling they get as "this makes me feel bad, therefore it is bad!" or b) bullies who no longer have the "omg you're in fandom how cringe, anyway I decide to treat you until you stop being weird is now fair game" angle to get their power trip so they've changed it to "omg why you do like problematic things, that's so toxic, anyway I decide to treat you until you stop being gross is fair game and hey, Type-A fans, don't you want an easy answer that will make you feel better? Then follow me!"

And it's not really the A-type fan's fault that they got manipulated by the B-type fans. You've grown, you know why what you did wasn't cool and you're not doing it anymore. Give yourself the grace looking back at yourself that you wish you had given other fans then, you deserve it too.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-27 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
The B fans appear to have changed because now they often have a thin veneer of a social-justice motivation over their bullying. If you can wildly reach to come up with a reason why something is "fetishizing" or whatever, you can whip up an army of naive, uncritical A fans even faster than if you just say it's Mary Sues or bad writing, and you can get them to be a lot more vicious because they feel like they're doing something righteous.

It's really terrible because it undermines the seriousness of the concepts they're using to justify what is, at its heart, the same old petty bullying and shipwars and grudgewank it's always been. Now there are too many people who don't know what "fetishizing" and "grooming" and words like that even truly mean anymore.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-27 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Also people calling a pairing between a 17-year-old and a 20-year-old "pedo," or more stupidly, a 25-year-old and a 60-year-old when what they really mean is "I disapprove of this age gap and/or one person being underaged." I fully respect someone's right to dislike something. What I don't respect is a dishonest argument and/or diluting terms in order to justify that dislike.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-27 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
Those two types are the same people at different stages of antihood. Most antis who are dumb kids unfortunately don't grow out of it, they just become dumb but more influential adults. Many of them are now the creators of shows and books with their own fandoms. This is the future of fandom I'm afraid.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-27 08:31 am (UTC)(link)
Nayrt

But I’m not sure I agree with any of this. Where is the one precedent or evidence of this happening enough to make you believe this? And it’s a bit overly cynical to believe this is the future of fandom when there’s still so many proshippers, both in fandom and in the actual entertainment business. Just look at Hannibal’s creator as an example of a proshipper in the business.

Thanks for turning my comment into a secret, secret maker! And also for using that pic. I'll try to think about the text length next time.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-27 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Good for you! I won't pretend I didn't have that phase when picking on spelling errors felt good but you pulled up from the nose dive in a more toxic environment than I had to deal with.

Now if just every other anti (or pro-anti lol) could do the same I wouldn't have to block a third of tumblr!

Sweet Back button's Badass Song?

sorry, that was awful (and maybe a little obscure). Let's just go with ah, the sweet, sweet back button.

(also: no, fingers, "stronk" is not a valid HTML tag! wtf)

(Anonymous) 2022-04-27 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Welp, way to go on *closing* the tag, self. oh well
