I really don't care about the met gala, but honestly? I think that makes me think more of them. I always HATED dress-up parties and parties with dress codes. On top of that, actors already dress like their character half of the time...so really, good for them for wearing what they like more.

They don't HAVE to go to the dress up party. But, if you go to a dress up party and don't dress up, people are going to side eye you as an asshole or lazy.

As an asshole? Really? Wow. That judgement really reflects more on you than them.

NAYRT - Uh, no. If you choose to go to a party you know is a costume party and you don't wear a costume, then you are being kind of a douche. It's not a huge deal, it's just a faux pas is all. It's thoughtless of the people who organized the party and are working hard to make it what it is.

However, the Met Gala isn't a good example of this. It's a fundraiser, for one thing--that's (ostensibly) what it's for. So as long as your attendance results in a donation, you're fulfilling the important bit. Also, I suspect celebs often feel quit a bit of professional pressure to attend, depending on what they have going on in their career at the time. A lot of the would probably rather be at home watching Netflix or something, but they've been strongly urged to attend. In which case, I don't blame them for doing the minimum.

No you aren't being a douche. There are so many possible circumstances surrounding someone not wearing a costume to a party, that assuming somebody is being a douche just reflects badly on that person.

That's sort of disregarding the fact that things like these are high profile networking events that can really boost your career. Or events where, if you get invited, your agent might really insist on your going because of publicity. Also, whether or not you stick to the theme - you are going to have a designer, and collaborating with a specific one might also be a strategic choice
