I really don't care about the met gala, but honestly? I think that makes me think more of them. I always HATED dress-up parties and parties with dress codes. On top of that, actors already dress like their character half of the time...so really, good for them for wearing what they like more.

this.

They don't HAVE to go to the dress up party. But, if you go to a dress up party and don't dress up, people are going to side eye you as an asshole or lazy.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-11 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
As an asshole? Really? Wow. That judgement really reflects more on you than them.

That's sort of disregarding the fact that things like these are high profile networking events that can really boost your career. Or events where, if you get invited, your agent might really insist on your going because of publicity. Also, whether or not you stick to the theme - you are going to have a designer, and collaborating with a specific one might also be a strategic choice

Met Gala is cosplay for famous people who are too good for cosplay, change my mind.

I knew almost nothing about the phenomenon except looking at past years' photos in Best Of compilations until this year, so I feel like it's approaching a point where everyone who is invited/plans to attend is going to very soon be unable to excuse themselves from not knowing that it's cosplay for famous people. In past years, I'd excuse the dudes in a tux because they come off as the same people as the generic nerds at an anime convention - they know cosplay exists, they like looking at the cosplay, but there's not there to cosplay. And that's okay in nerd spaces. But the Met Gala being a celeb event feels like the nerds in their greasy Star Wars t-shirts are posing for the paparazzi (and being deliberately photographed BY said paparazzi) as if they're just as photo-worthy as the cosplayers. That's probably where the disconnect comes from. And that's not likely to change unless the Met Gala itself lays down some red carpet rules, or the celebrity blogosphere collectively stops publishing photos of dudes in tuxes who didn't even try.

In other words, don't hold your breath and cut yourself some slack, OP. But direct the "ugh" feelings where it belongs - on celebrity culture not understanding the assignment and sticking with the status quo, and on the Met Gala cosplay not understanding how cosplay is supposed to work, culturally speaking.

I love this analysis, tbh.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-11 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! Excellently put.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-11 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
The only costume I enjoyed this year was Riz Ahmed. Bang, right on the nose.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-11 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
His was my favourite as well. A few others turned in good looks, but not as memorable.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-12 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
His was great. I was kind of like, "Cool, alright," just seeing pictures, but once I read an interview with him about his inspiration, it was the winner of the night for me.

To be fair, Sebastian Stan's outfit was coordinated with a couple of other people, including Meryl Streep. Not sure what exactly they were going for - I never saw any explanation for it - but it wasn't thoughtless.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-11 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I’m pretty sure they weren’t actually coordinated. Apparently that pink is the color of the season and all-pink outfits are “in” at the moment.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-11 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I heard/read somewhere that that specific color of dye was invented during the 'Gilded age' or whatever it was called. And it would obviously have been fancy and expensive, so...? No idea if it's true.

But yeah, there were a couple of celebs who went to the same designer and they all had the bright pink, so it could just be they trusted an 'expert' when they shouldn't have.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-12 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT--the first synthetic dyes made from coal tar derivatives showed up in I think the 1860s, so a bit early for gilded age fashion, but they were definitely still being used into the 1890s. The very first was called mauveine and a very bright purple, rather than pink.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-12 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
At least it wasn't a boring tux. Like, even if he missed the mark for me at least he was shooting.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-11 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Sebastian Stan's hair and make up are on point, but there were only a few people's whose outfits I appreciated -- Lizzo, Billy Eyelash, Michelle Yeah.

I agree. Like ugh. Some of it is just... :| What is going on?

(Anonymous) 2022-06-11 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Gilded Age as a theme is actually remarkably on point right now if one considers the social and political aspects of 1870s-1900s western society. The trouble is that nobody took advantage of that in their costumes and in fact most of them were clearly totally ignorant as to what the theme even actually was.

Quannah Chasinghorse and Riz Ahmed did!

It particularly bugs me when the celebs who work with designers for the gala STILL wander so far off theme. You would think the designers would be ALL OVER the opportunity to create something that fits with the theme but also is really cool and looks flattering on the wearer. I guess it might be a matter of a) designer just wants to dress the celebrity in whatever they want to show off, regardless if it works with the theme, or b) the celebrity exercises most of the control and rejects anything they're presented with that's on-theme (and we all know they can make questionable fashion choices even when there's no theme). There's also the "I just don't want to make a big deal about this" attitude which I would applaud if this was The People's Choice Awards, But...

I can't really blame the grand majority of celebrities because they're straight up not picking their outfits, because they're not paying for their plates. The designers are paying and the celebs are wearing the outfits they pick.

And like frankly? I don't trust these celebs for this. Most of these people are actors, singers or influencers. Fashion design is a legit skill and lbr SJP is one of the few people any designer trusts to have interesting and/or good taste enough to have a say in their outfit.

I do think less of the designers.

I feel a sense of disappointment because I love seeing people go all out for any sort of costume party. NGL A few celebs I feel a little more personal disappointment because I expected more artsy enthusiasm than what they showed up in.

Sorta off topic, I feel like Met Gala's been lacking in terms of theme and general costumes from attendees in the last few years (2020 and it's aftereffects didn't help, but Met Gala's been a bit bleh even before COVID happened)

Even Tom and Lorenzo were harsh on these outfits( I only pay attention to the Met Gala when they are blogging/tweeting about it, because their commentary is hilarious). All that money and that's the best they could come up with?

(Anonymous) 2022-06-16 11:16 am (UTC)(link)
if it makes you feel any better, it's actually the clothing brands themselves who pick out what celebs wear every year. unfortunately they never really care about theme and just want people to model their clothing ;;
