Wow, that was pretty shitty of your Mom.

I get it anon. I still won't lend books to my sibling because they dog eared a book of mine 20 years ago.

Text documents versus books, you mean.

This is so dumb I don’t even want to call it a bad take, because that’s an insult to takes.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-21 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Agree that was crappy of your mom, who should've planned for an activity to keep your brother occupied during the long trip if he was too young to plan for himself. Instead, she punished you, the kid who did plan ahead and brought something to keep yourself busy.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-21 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Not at all a stupid reason, honestly. You were done dirty, that can stick with a person.

That's not a stupid reason at all. I'd carry a grudge forever.

I like the physical sensation of paper books but tbh I'm old and have back problems and having ebooks is way more convenient for long periods of time away and reading books that, if printed, would be rather large and uncomfortable to read.

That is my worst nightmare, OP. I used to do the very same thing for car trips and, fortunately, my brother made sure to bring his own books!! I feel for you.

That was really shitty of your Mom. She punished you for your brother's tantrum that she didn't want to deal with.

I prefer ebooks because they don’t stain from hand sweat.

call me Sigmunda but it sounds like your brother was your mom's favorite and I don't blame you one bit for being pissed off.

I love both. Ebooks are useful, though I do prefer the physical ones. But there are times where bringing 20 physical books isn't practical, and an ebook reader is the perfect thing.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-21 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
This is why my sister and I each used to bring a small stack of books on long trips (and honestly part of the reason why I like e-readers is I remember being a kid dragging five or six books back and forth from the car constantly and it is so much easier and more convenient to just bring one tablet which fits neatly in my purse).

I was thrilled when ebooks became a thing because I'd never be bored again (this has proven true) so I was very surprised that my young nephews strongly prefer paper books, even if they have to lug them around. Apparently the ebooks don't feel like reading? They're big readers so this involves a lot of lugging books around!

That’s not embarrassing at all, OP. Your mom did a really crummy thing. Personally, I prefer physical books, but I won’t deny the convenience of ebooks. Putting a tablet in my carry on is way easier than trying to cram a bunch of paperbacks in there and not be over the weight limit.

Damn, that SUCKED. What a crappy thing to do.

I got too motion sick to read on trips, so I generally stared out the window and made up stories or looked at the scenery and tried to decide the best place to sleep or make a campfire if I were walking instead of riding.

I love books, and will always have books. I read fanfiction online, but when it comes to the profic, I always want to have a book, particularly if it's a story I love and have had forever - the tattered cover and aging paper makes me happy.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-22 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, fuck that. I'd hold a grudge for sure. I hope that was just an off day for your mom, and not a hallmark of your family dynamic. I'm sorry if it was the latter.

I think it would've been completely understandable to let your brother borrow the book until you were done yours, and then let him start on yours so you could read the second one. But you shouldn't have had to pay for your parent's failure to bring entertainment for him (or his lack of foresight to bring his own entertainment, depending on how old he was), plus the way it worked out they were basically punishing you for planning ahead. Just shitty all around.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-22 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't realize how much I flip back to check random details until I tried to read ebooks. Without landmarks it's hard, so I am a paper reader.

I will also never forget the year we were setting off for our summer trip to see my uncle's family, seven hours away. I didn't have a book picked out, panicked, and grabbed a grody looking paperback off a shelf because of its intriguing title: My Family and Other Animals. And then proceeded to shriek with laughter and read large chunks aloud to my own family all the way to our destination. They were *extremely* patient about it!

Convenience and infinite choice are why I exclusively read ebooks now. I’ve had situations where my backup book was unavailable and it sucks.

I’m sorry your mom did that. I wish parents could be better about recognising the stuff that’s really important to their kids when mediating situations like that. My parents always got it wrong for all of their kids and we all resent them and each other for it still.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-22 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
Huh I thought it would be one of those horror stories that go "and then he got car-sick from reading in the car (unlike OP who was used to it) and puked all over my favorite book". Sort of relieved it didn't but yikes anyway.
