I kind of like the system that's developed in the last week of having the individual comment threads for each secret, but then there's that handful of people on the last two pages who rock out with their bad selves and just post comments without looking for the threads.

Just a Q about the new system. If we have a comment about the secrets in general, like maybe how we enjoy there are a lot of secrets about a particular fandom, could we still just comment that on the post? Or maybe there should be a thread for general comments?

[identity profile] rah-bop.livejournal.com 2009-04-11 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
T-there already is a thread for general comments. It's right under "Name the fandom" and before the other comments.

/loves it

I personally really hate the new system, although I know I'm the minority here. I mostly reply to F!S secrets for some conversation & the lulz, basically. Making me look up all secret posts and having to comment them seperately just proves to be more effort than I'm willing to put in. I tried, but damn, it's just really obnoxious.

Plus, it seems to be much harder to make some random conversation! I've seen a few, but mostly it's just people replying to the secrets itself.

I used to think this would be an awesome way to organise the comments, but after a week of it, I don't like it. I miss the random flow of conversation that the old system had. Plus, I actually like browsing through all the comments to see what others have said. I often pick up secrets to comment on that I might've not taken notice of before.

Also, by the time I get to read the secret posts due to time differences, the first two pages have upwards of 200+ comments each (sometimes 300+ for the first page) and this takes a long time to load. I don't know which comment threads are worth expanding, so I don't bother and now the comments are just boring and I don't waste any time reading them now. I just look at the secrets and leave it at that. Commenting on them individually is too hard.

[identity profile] artemis-archer.livejournal.com 2009-04-11 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with all of this, it pretty much sums up my thoughts on the new system too

With this new system I've felt absolutely zero desire to comment on anything because it's just going to be buried in a thread that the OP and maybe a couple others will bother to read in full. The chance for scroller-byers to see something and comment is completely diminished. I expressed my initial concerns in one of the other poll threads earlier this week and nothing has changed. Putting it in practice just solidified my distaste for participation now. Sadly, it looks as though I'm the minority here so I'm just stuck to reading secrets with zero participation in discussion. Thanks for at least attempting to gather opinions.

[identity profile] ayeayes.livejournal.com 2009-04-11 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
:( I understand....I have to wonder why so many people are actually LIKING it. The only people I can imagine would like the new system are those who only wanna see what people said about their secrets and don't wanna bother with anyone else's.
In fact, the only people it's easier for are the people who just read without commenting...

I kind of wish there were threads for the nonsecrets since it's so subjective who gets a n!s, ect...unless it's too big.

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2009-04-11 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, I think Case making the one thread at the end for the n!s/n!f is better, because commenters often "coded" it differently, so ctrl-F'ing for those was such a hassle I never did it. Now the n!s/n!f comments are much easier to find.

[identity profile] jianna.livejournal.com 2009-04-11 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't really like the new system either, for reasons others have already expressed. I've hardly commented on secrets at all this week because I don't want to have to find the right thread for the secrets I want to talk about, and it doesn't lend itself to conversations springing up in the comments. But uh... clearly outvoted here, somehow =\

[identity profile] kartos.livejournal.com 2009-04-12 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
Really? I've actually struck up far more conversations than the old way. Only a small part of that is that it's insanely difficult for me to go through pages and pages of comments since it reloads everything and I have next to no RAM.

[identity profile] missmorrichan.livejournal.com 2009-04-11 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm really digging the organization of the new system, that's for sure. Having all the comments for one secret in one spot is rather handy!

But on the flipside, like a few others have said, I like being able to see someone's thoughts on multiple secrets at a time, and sometimes while reading the comments I'll notice secrets or whatever that I didn't pay much attention to the first time. You don't really see people chatting in the comments over several similar interests as much, either, since each comment thread is pretty much contained to one fandom, as opposed to reading over someone's individual comment and thinking "Wow, this person likes fandoms x/y/z!". That make sense?

Either way, cheers to trying out new things, technophile! Keeps things fun and exciting, finding out what works and what doesn't :D

This is going to sound kinda weird, but the best way I can explain my feelings is that this new system feels cold and impersonal. I liked the old f!s for its spouts of randomness - it gave the place personality. Now, we're just packaging f!s up all nice and tidy in a pretty little package and keeping things organized and blargh...

Ever heard of this situation?

So, you have two uncles. On one side is the penny-pinching, immaculately-pressed-collared-shirt-wearing, dull-as-a-doorknob Uncle Ted. He's neat and organized, obsessive-compulsive, and extremely professional. He seems like he could be a cool guy, but never breaks away from this tradition to relate to your level. Instead, he always stands on a pedestal, someone to look up to, but not completely relate to, because he's not personable... or impersonal... or friendly even. Might even seem like a stuck-up jerk.

And then there's your Uncle Butch. Lazy, unorganized, pot-smoking hippy (not to be insulting). He ain't all that successful, and your parents definitely wouldn't approve of you aspiring to be like him, but he's fun, friendly, and all-around good guy. Always reliable for a good time and many laughs.

This is probably a really bad analogy (and I'm certain I'll have people jumping down my back), but it kinda sums up my feelings. I wanna hang out with Uncle Butch. I'd rather keep Uncle Ted off the side, separate from my fun-times.

Long story short: Let's keep this place more fun, pleasant, and random.

But since I'm in the minority, I guess it doesn't matter.

[identity profile] kuromitsu.livejournal.com 2009-04-12 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Long story short: Let's keep this place more fun, pleasant, and random.

This. It's a chore posting every damn comment in different threads (where they get lost among all the other comments), and I'm here to have a bit of fun. Normally I'm all for being neat and organized but not during happy fun times.

I really wonder what's so great about this new system aside of having to press Ctrl+F less than before, that's causing the overwhelming number of votes on "yes"...

[identity profile] ayeayes.livejournal.com 2009-04-11 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok, here're other reasons why I miss the old format.

See, if I read a comment about one of my secrets, the excitement wasn't "over", because I knew there may or may not be more comments on the following pages. If all the comments are in one thread, it's like "Oh, people said this, this, this, and this about it...ok, move on."
I LIKED the suspense when the comments were scattered throughout the pages...like "OMG SOMEONE COMMENTED!...Ok, now they're commenting on some others....OH THEY COMMENTED ON MINE AGAIN!"

Also, the whole thing about how some secrets I didn't even notice at first, but then I saw interesting comments on while reading the comments for a secret I was originally interested in. Like, when I read a post that comments on a secret I wrote or am interested in, I'll read the other comments while I'm there, and think "Hey, I didn't know about that show, but that's still an interesting point!"

[identity profile] morejellytoast.livejournal.com 2009-04-12 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with that! Searching for comments on your post was like a treasure hunt.

[identity profile] joyciel.livejournal.com 2009-04-11 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I just think it's easier and faster to comment in the old system. Like I open another window with the comment box open and on another page I look at secrets and comment accordingly. The new system I have to keep scrolling down to comment. And I never found it that tedious to look at all the pages so...

But ah well, I'm clearly out voted lol. C'est la vie~

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/nightcrawler_2_/ 2009-04-11 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe I'm not getting something, but why can't you do that now? You can always have one window open with a comment box and another for the post itself...

Aw damn. I can't stand the new system at all, I really can't. It's bleak and impersonal and a royal pain in the ass. Finding responses to my own secrets more easily is sort of nice, but it isn't worth the price of having the fun of reading the comments taken away. I already miss the way this place used to feel. And, like I said before, there is NO way I'm going to be able to manually look through every single thread. That would take all night. (Inconvenient on top of sterile. Woo. Awesome.) But I guess we're stuck with this now, so I'll just have to get by reading the regular secrets at the end, at least until they're guilted into keeping to the new system. Damn. :/

[identity profile] ayeayes.livejournal.com 2009-04-12 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
We won't let you down. :/

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2009-04-12 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Still hate it like woah. I've already stated why multiple times, and others have pretty much summed it up above anyway.

I gotta say one thing though... I really think it's a bummer that those of us against it post long, well thought-out replies explain why this is truly a BAD IDEA -- while the people in favor apparently just hit the voting button (there are a few exceptions, I know). Can't help but wonder how many of them are trolls who vote just to piss people off, y'know?
ext_63689: (useless supply teacher)

[identity profile] vociferocity.livejournal.com 2009-04-12 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
well...I guess the people in favour probably don't feel the need to post a long, detailed explanation of why they feel this is the best plan ever omg, you know? they don't really have to convince case (or anyone else, for that matter) of their pov, not if it's a votey thing and they're in the majority

I really like the new system. I can see the points that people who don't like it are making, but to me it saves SO much time and makes it possible to see what a lot of different people are saying on any one secret. But then I am not necessarily a huge user of the comment system--I've probably commented more this last week than I did before, because I could find the comment threads for the secrets I liked without having to ctrl-F constantly. sometimes on the old system, if I didn't have an hour or two to spend just reading F!S, I just wouldn't read any comments at all.

But I can see why people don't like it. I kinda like the mixed system with extra freestyle comments at the end--though I probably won't end up really reading them.

[identity profile] morejellytoast.livejournal.com 2009-04-12 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate it. It's too boring. Someone might have said something absolutely hysterical under a secret that I didn't care about, and I'd never know about it because the secret didn't interest me. Under the old system, I would've seen it while looking for secrets I actually cared about.

[identity profile] meran-flash.livejournal.com 2009-04-12 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
The lag the new system causes is KILLING ME. Unless I get to the post pretty much immediately after it's posted (which almost never happens), browsing anything on the first three comment pages is pretty much impossible. Just reading the secrets, then, has become much more of a chore, and actually reading/posting comments has become a tremendous, TREMENDOUS chore.

I hate feeling like I'm fighting a losing battle. But honestly, I could sacrifice the old 'feeling' of this place (that I *will* miss but can deal with losing) for whatever benefits this new system brings--except for this lag issue. It's a *practical* issue, and I can't let go of it.

(Anonymous) 2009-04-13 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I really like the new format and all the discussions you get out of it! It really helps out for all the people who actually care what everyone thinks about a particular secret. If you wanted to read what everyone thought using the old way, it would take forever, and you'd still miss a few replies anyways.

I think some of the people who hate the new way of doing things only skim what others have to say, or else they would appreciate how much easier things are now. They just want to dump all their comments in one post and wait for people to respond to them specifically on their thoughts. Why not take the time to go to the secret thread and see what other people think too?

[identity profile] meran-flash.livejournal.com 2009-04-13 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
I DID USE TO SEE WHAT OTHER PEOPLE HAD TO SAY. I USED TO DO IT *MORE*. I used to read far, far more comments because they were *easier to read*. But it takes too much time now. It's not worth it.
