both the eu and the usa are perfectly capable of being homophobic on their own. this idea that progressive media are being held back by evil china is so convenient

(Anonymous) 2022-07-09 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
The level of ridiculous in this comment is astronomical. The reality of Chinese censorship does not negate homophobia also existing in other places. China is a huge international market and most films tend to be made so they will sell there. I have no doubt that homophobia exists within the industry and China is a good excuse, but it's not just a scapegoat for Hollywood's homophobia, the market forces also have their own effect.

NAYRT

I agree that China is not just a scapegoat for Hollywood's homophobia. But the original post very explicitly used it that way.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-09 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
what i'm critcizing is that every time this topic comes up people go "well they need to sell in china" as if that's the end of discussion. ever since it was pointed out that the chinese market has an influence on the decisions corporations in the west make anyone who's trying to sound in-the-know trots it out, it's pointless, reductive and deflects the blame

~the level of ridiculous in this comment is astronomical~ god you're insufferable

(Anonymous) 2022-07-09 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah I see. You're one of those who cannot deal with reality not conforming to the way they think the world should work according to Tumblr.

Also, nobody is offering this explanation without criticism. The criticism is inherent FFS. It's huge hypocrisy by the West in the name of money.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-09 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
The account you're offering is basically: Hollywood genuinely wants to make LGBT movies but ducks out of actually doing so because they have to cater to the homophobic Chinese market.

This is critical of Hollywood to some degree, because it paints them as hypocritical. But it also presupposes that certain other criticisms of Hollywood and the West are not true - specifically, it presupposes that Hollywood is genuinely interested in making LGBT movies and is not homophobic, and it presupposes that no significant segment (in financial terms) of the Western audience is homophobic.

THIS

(Anonymous) 2022-07-09 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you trying to imply that Hollywood (that's never been exactly progressist in terms of gender and sexual preferences) doesn't make movies with gay subtext because they'd have to sell them to the land of danmei? Fuck

(Anonymous) 2022-07-10 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
To the land of danmei were danmei shows are actually highly censored or don't get released at all because they don't pass censorship, several danmei authors have either "disappeared" or are known to be in jail for writing it...and the list goes on?
Yes.

Just because danmei is popular in writing and manhua (which appears to be a bit of a loophole and the way it's going these days, it's probably just a matter of time until they change that) doesn't mean the ridiculously homophobic censorship laws aren't real.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-10 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Not sure how much of it isn't "fairytale for foreigners" considering how the genre keeps growing, spreading and going international. And regardless, pretty sure that 20 years ago the US was known for censoring Asian (as in Japanese) cartoons pretty heavily. So... I find it incredibly ill intentioned to single out and use the Chinese (and/or Indonesian) market as an excuse for any type of, oh, cultural Christian morality based censorship.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-10 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, are you trying to imply the facts listed above aren't true?
Yikes, you are naive.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-10 09:35 am (UTC)(link)
do you actually have the gall to talk to people like this irl or is this internet tough-guy persona your outlet

(Anonymous) 2022-07-10 11:13 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, are you actually implying that calling someone naive for saying "I bet all the factual stories about censorship and human rights violations in China are just fairytales" is too harsh? Because yes, I absolutely would tell someone irl they're full of shit if they said that to me, just like I'd tell that to someone who, for example, is a flat earther, anti-vaxxer or other conspiracy bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-10 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
love how you're framing your behavior, is that really how it's going in your head? like you're looking at the convo and go "i called someone naive, how could anyone find that harsh?"

(Anonymous) 2022-07-10 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
No? Actually, naive was far too nice for the bullshit airt spouted. So yeah, naive in this context was not harsh at all compared to what I could have said.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-10 11:13 am (UTC)(link)
Is this your troll internet persona or are you really this dumb irl?

(Anonymous) 2022-07-10 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
look at you go, you badass

(Anonymous) 2022-07-10 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Look at you go, you moron.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-09 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
When it comes to big-budget tenploe movies, it's true, though. There are countries that will not allow a movie to even be shown if there is any sort of lgbt content. China and Indonesia being high on that list. If a studio has spent 200 million on a movie, I can understand why they would want to maximize their profit any way they can. It's show business, not show friends, and those big budget tentpoles subsidize smaller movies and domestic projects that do contain lgbt content.

I get why people are upset, but it's a lot more complicated than many fans think.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-09 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
"it's a lot more complicated than many fans think"

that includes more complicated than "china, lol"

(Anonymous) 2022-07-09 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Criticism of China's censorship of LGBT is 'china lol' to you? Huh.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-09 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

the original post, in its entirety, said: "Well they had to sell to China. What do you want? LGBT rights aren't worth billions. Apparently."

I do think that counts as "china lol".

(Anonymous) 2022-07-10 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Sarcasm beyond you, huh?

(Anonymous) 2022-07-10 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
What?
