I'm not sure I understand your point!

I'm glad it wasn't just me. I can't parse this at all, I thought it was just because it is midnight and I need bed that it didn't make sense. I apologise in advance if this doesn't make sense either.

I think it's like this post (https://agentfrostbite.tumblr.com/post/687192951520215040/instant-gratification-culture-has-absolutely):

I think people have truly lost any ability to be patient with storytelling.
‘I don’t understand this’ They’ll explain it if you wait.
‘I don’t like how this episode left things hanging’ There’s a continuation next week.
‘This character is flat’ Wait for them to be fleshed out.
So many of the complaints I see about shows lately are people being confused by things THAT THE SHOW WANTS YOU TO BE CONFUSED BY THATS THE FUN OF MYSTERY AND FORESHADOWING YOU ABSOLUTE GOBLINS THE MAIN CHARACTER IS ALSO CONFUSED AND THEYRE GONNA DO A BIG REVEAL AND EXPLANATION LATER IF YOU WOULD JUST FUCKING WAIT

Instant gratification culture has absolutely ruined major parts of storytelling

It happens all the time for fic too. Like, how about you take a step back and let the author tell the story before you start freaking out about how garbage a dangling plot hook is?

I once had someone comment on a chapter of mine to complain that I hadn't tied up a particular loose end that seemed central to the plot.

They commented on chapter 5 of a completed 15 chapter fic. Maybe finish reading the story, or skip to the last chapter or something?

AYRT

Thanks for the explanation! I can't say this is something I see a lot of, but that's probably just the fandoms / fandom spaces I'm in.

AYRT - You're welcome, and I'm glad it was helpful and didn't come across like I was trying to "Well, actually..." you! 😅

Yes, this is what I mean. And it mostly seems to coming from people's favorites not acting in a way that goes with their fandom participation

I don't get it, either.

Is this about Star Wars fandom?

(Anonymous) 2022-07-11 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly 9/10 when I see someone complaining about 'bad writing' it isn't actually bad... the story just didn't unfold like that fan, or group of fans, wanted. But a lot of people are pretty shit at being able to tell the difference between the two yet are so very vocal about it.

This could be a whole nother rant. Nothing's just decent anymore

(Anonymous) 2022-07-11 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I get what you mean, OP. Like, I think people have expectations of "Main character is not a perfect person but they will learn from their mistakes and by a certain point they will be better." And then if the character repeats a mistake or they actually don't learn from their mistake, audiences/fans get upset.
They fail to realize that often that's how life is and maybe the storytellers were trying to say something about things like this? Which are really common IRL! People do have a habit of repeating what they grew up on. And again, constantly learning how we keep messing up is how we learn to grow. Shouldn't that be how characters progress too? Not everyone is going to always make the right choice or being blatantly evil.

Yeah, narrative arcs need some time to go somewhere. Let the season play out, I always say. But people are horribly judgy about everything, OP. They won't even see someone who's been cast in a project before bitching about it to the heavens. E.g., everyone screamed about how awful Robert Downey was as a casting choice for Iron Man and...well they were sure as shit wrong about that. Just shut up and watch!

The ones that bother me most is when they've seen a trailer or teaser, work out how the entire series is going to go, then get upset when it does not, in fact, do what they imagined. Imagining it is fine! But complaining about it not being something you made up based on a minute of edited footage is just futile.

Thank you for making my secret!
