I don't intrinsically mind Human/Doctor romances, I mind the idea of it being totally central to the show, which I think the Rose era strayed into at times.

But I don't have any problem with the basic concept. Sure, the Doctor's an alien who is several thousand years old, but that doesn't have to be a problem; some people are into that kind of thing.

I guess to me, it reduces the sense of the Doctor's alienness, but maybe that's also because I grew up on Classic Who so I project it into New Who.

I don't think it necessarily has to reduce the sense of the Doctor's alienness - I reckon you can definitely have a Doctor/companion ship where the Doctor is unambiguously an alien. My feelings on this are probably related to the fact that I think human/alien ships are a good idea in general.

But, yes, it can have that effect in practice and it did play out that way in the 10/Rose era.

Yeah, I agree. It comes down to how it's written (and personal preferences).

I could’ve written this comment almost exactly! Though I guess people have also always read undertones into classic Doctors/companions as well. It’s just the writers weren’t going that way so it wasn’t in your face. I think that’s why some older fans found School Reunion so jarring and claimed Sarah Jane wasn’t the same character.

I edited the parts I found felt OOC for Sarah Jane out of my brain! I love that episode so much.

I love that episode too. It was nice to have her back even if the switch up in characterisation was weird. But it was pure nostalgia fuel right down to bringing back K9 and I didn’t mind that.

Same. Plus it was nice to have a show that wasn't all about romance.

Yeah, I noped out of Nu!Who as soon as I caught the way the wind was blowing with Rose in the first few episodes. Doctor/Companion romance just is not for me at all. Not in the post-s27 books, and definitely not in the new stuff. Even the concept of River Song's relationship with the Doctor is offputting to me.

I like human/alien ships, regardless of the age difference or other power imbalance. It creates all kinds of great opportunities for stories to explore so many things. But I suppose to some people out there, they're "problematic."

Yes, this is how I feel. The Doctor is an amazing person that can easily pass for a human (just a weird one) so companions for them isn't unexpected. Neither is the Doctor feeling something back. I just never want it to become the central focus of the Doctor and companion relationship. That definitely happened with Rose and a little with Martha (although that was unrequited and just dragged out the Rose stuff even more)
