Well being that I don't want to associate myself with Avatar fandom, I can deal with that. There are talented people everywhere. Plus, I have always been a canon over fanon girl anyways.

Also why is it such a big thing to identify your fandom involvement with what ship you ship. My favorite fandom pairing does not determine my identity in fandom.

I am very much a (kind of ridiculous) fan of a couple of ATLA ships, but it has never occurred to me to you know...REFER TO MYSELF in those terms! I don't see why my shipping preferences need to be at the core of my entire fandom identity! It is kind of weird and creepy!

The few times someone's called me a "Maikoan" I was like, 1) dude, no one actually calls themselves that, 2) ew, please stop.

This is why I hate ship names, it totally divides and makes that the center of the entire world. I mean I can OTP like hell, but I don't think of my self in terms of the fact that I like Mai/Zuko or Suki/Sokka, I don't even like referring to myself as a shipper in fandom

ANd yeah, if anyone ever calls me a Maikoan, I would laugh, because that is so foreign to me. I don't even like using the smushed name on its own.

Dude, ship what you want to ship! But I gotta say...it's the whole "we are the most numerous/talented/AWESOME FUCK YEAH" thing that feeds my irritation with that part of fandom. I mean...for one thing, who cares what's the most popular? Seriously? And I think it's pretty clear that the rest is a matter of taste.

I agree. I used to be a Zutara fan (I just lost interest) and know very many nice people in the fandom, but dammit this stuff is the thing that made me give up trying to defend them. It's impossible to convince anyone that the loud and obnoxious ones are in the minority when they pop up everywhere.
