Dude, ship what you want to ship! But I gotta say...it's the whole "we are the most numerous/talented/AWESOME FUCK YEAH" thing that feeds my irritation with that part of fandom. I mean...for one thing, who cares what's the most popular? Seriously? And I think it's pretty clear that the rest is a matter of taste.

I'm glad you're enjoying yourself, but you know...as the Zuko/Katara fandom IS ACTUALLY very much the majority of what's going on, lording your "bounty" over everyone else at every opportunity is just irritating. Also mean-spirited. Also obnoxious. :|

It's like...if you're so thoroughly satisfied with your place in fandom, drowning in more fic than you could ever read and enough fanart to paper your entire house, WHY BE A DICK ABOUT IT? I just...it will never make sense to me. Ever. At all.

I think it goes back to the we "WRAP OURSELVES UP IN WHAT WE SHIP", and since people latch on to it as their identity they have to prove they are better and whatever then the other group.

It is maddening. This is why I swore I would never get involved in another crazy ship warry fandom, and then I found Avatar, and well, I get wrapped in it all again.

Wait, wait, I think there's more to it than that. It's obviously got to do with the fact that everybody's too wrapped up in their shipping, but it's also got to do with being bashed for that ship. After enough secrets like 120 up there, you feel need to lash out. Which, of course, encourages secrets like 120, and then... it's just a very bad cycle .___.

I wish the Zutarans could find away of loving our ship (publicly, even!) without being so confrontational about it, and I wish the... everybody else in the fandom could forgive us for our batshittery. Sigh. Anyway, sorry to ramble at you.

TBH, I think that if a large enough segment of Z/K shippers behaved in a classy manner for long enough, and more often kept each other in check when in shared fandom spaces, there would be a lot less "bashing."

Once again: I wish some of the nicer Z/K BNFs would team up to start an alternate community with stricter rules regarding negativity. I think it would go a REALLY LONG WAY toward changing the tone of that part of fandom for the better.

That said, I don't think there's ever any excuse for being a jerk. Which goes for both sides of this any anything else.

I'm not actually a part of the fandom, but that sounds like a very logical solution. I have no idea how to make it happen, and I don't have any idea how likely it is (I'm going to take a gander and say... not at all?), but... well, it would be very nice?

And I didn't mean to be excusing the behavior in my post, sorry if I came off that way! I meant to add that it was really stupid and immature to lash out, but maybe that got lost along the way.

I've already had this conversation with you before, but for the benefit of anyone else reading it: maizuko has an extremely strict no-bashing policy (http://community.livejournal.com/maizuko/113820.html) that is regularly and rigidly enforced. If you can find a bashing comment that has been missed, you should alert the mod, as she will then delete it and/or give that commenter a warning. She has actually deleted posts before because of their anti-"Zutara" content.

And that is really all I have to say about that.

No, not manonlechat. And no sarcasm in my response below.

I regret never finishing our conversation of last month (I meant to, and got sidetracked), but I think I hit upon one of the differences between us: while I find mindless character bashing (not the same as thoughtful criticism, btw) as weary as the next person, I see a sharp difference between bashing a character/storyline/'ship and bashing a living, feeling person (ie. an opposing "shipper"). "Zutara is an idiot ship" or "Mai is a dumb bitch" may be the height of dumb and inane, but on the moral scale those statements just aren't on par with "Zutarians are assholes" and "Kataang shippers are dumb babies." Countering the former with the latter is like shooting someone for cutting you off on the highway, in my opinion.

All that being said, I'm digressing: mindless character bashing is extremely rare on katara_zuko. Truly. It is a remarkably sane and peaceful community considering its OTP's popularity and large fanbase.

I would be interested in hearing specifics of the bashing you witnessed on katara_zuko because maybe it would me to better understand either our differences in philosophy, or our different view of the facts.

I haven't been there recently (and don't plan on going back), but the top posts were basically long screeds on what was wrong with the other side and what not. It just seemed vastly negative and bitter, and well that just isn't a constructive environment.

And honestly, the thing with character bashing, is that to me it isn't inane, it is usually insulting and offensive in the language used, and it usually makes a comment on people who like the character and how horrible they are.

For instance, I don't find a comm where "Mai is a dumb bitch" is allowed to be thrown around, because it is offensive to me and extremely negative.

That and I can't see how that kind of talk is even on topic.

That must be some other comm because it isn't maizuko, they have a policy and it is definitely enforced, Unless you think there is some super secret filter, which there isn't. That is one of the draws of the comm.

I've never hung out on maizuko but I've never seen it criticized as Zutara-bashing. Flaming Knives was pretty nasty for a while. Whether it still is or not, I don't know.

I am going to be honest, what happened with Zuko/Katara, is the hate came as a backlash, when I came into fandom, it was Zuko/Katara bashing on everybody else. I am not condoning it but that is how fandom rolled out.

As someone who doesn't ship it or even really like it, I feel defensive in putting forth my tastes because of the preconceptions about what I am liked based on the simple fact of what I ship.

It all honestly goes down to overinvestment. I honestly don't mind people not having the same preferences, but it is the attitude that breeds one must come over the other.

I agree. I used to be a Zutara fan (I just lost interest) and know very many nice people in the fandom, but dammit this stuff is the thing that made me give up trying to defend them. It's impossible to convince anyone that the loud and obnoxious ones are in the minority when they pop up everywhere.

I actually feel like the problem is that sometimes the mods are "those fans" if you get what I mean. That might even be the problem with the Zutara fandom overall. A lot of times people tend to get behind what the big name fans say, and if they're letting all of their negative opinions spew all the time, then other people are going to fall in.
