(Anonymous) 2022-08-07 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)You're literally just describing meta. You know, like people have been writing in their LJs and other blogs since the dawn of internet fandom? Changing the media and putting it up on youtube for people to watch 'live' does not make it suddenly worthy of payment.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-07 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)There's a huge difference in the amount of work it took to write an LJ post, even a long, detailed, acafen post, and the amount of work it takes to be a youtuber. And getting any kind of an audience on youtube, enough to make real money, comes with huge risk of harassment, hate mobs, and canceling.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-07 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)Talking in front of a camera VS. writing it down? Are we talking time spent? How do you know, have you produced the same amount of content in both formats??? What, exactly, is your definition here?
And you keep talking about 'deserving payment for finding an audience'. Why? If you're so attention-starved that's how you want to spend your time, that's on you, not the randos who happen to get fed your video through algorithms.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-07 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)I used to write many, many long posts on LJ. I would not dream of attempting to start a youtube channel because I know what it takes. You have to learn how to light and shoot yourself, edit (until you can pay someone), you have to be okay talking and being on camera (which I'm not), you have to build a parasocial relationship with your audience to get anywhere, which then becomes a double-edged sword of people thinking they're you're friend... and then like I said, the hate mobs and harassment. Look at Lindsay Ellis and Sarah Z.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-07 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)If you are creating a thing solely for the purpose of making money, and you explicitly choose to do that off the back of an existing popular franchise? Sorry, but the secret-maker is right: you're a parasite leeching off fandom to make bank.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-08 08:29 am (UTC)(link)I'm a blogger who tried to become a youtuber, and you don't know what you're talking about. Sure, prettifying my blog took some time, but once the code was down, it didn't need to change. For youtube videos, the work on editing is continuous and I'm not exaggerating when I say that a 10 second clip would take over an hour to edit. And in order to make any money on youtube, you need at least 10 minutes. I released 3 5-minute videos, of which each took a month to finish, before giving up and sticking to blogging. It takes years to build up enough following on the channel to monetize it, if you have less than 300,000 followers you can't even dream of making any money on your videos and how many tumblrs have you seen with 300,000 followers? For most people the amount of work it takes to make money on youtube is equivalent to a job, except it's less paid than many jobs.
