How do you listen to music?

(Anonymous) 2022-08-12 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Do you listen to a whole album?

Bits and pieces? Try out one song and say that's good enough and move on to another artist?

Personally, once I've listened to a song or two, if I'm curious or want more or it's an artist I'm previously familiar with, I'll sit down and listen to the whole album. Maybe while I commute or am at work or am cleaning, but it's something where I can fully listen to the words and the music. Really listen to the story the album is telling. How about you guys?

I put all my songs on my ipod. I usually shuffle all of them. I do have some specific playlists. Car one, plane one, workout one, Star Wars OST one, a Sabaton one, a viking/celtic music one.

Sometimes I'll play through a full album at once. But usually I shuffle.

It varies. Recently I have been struggling with a health issue and even going outside isn't always easy, so, whenever I do go outside (mostly for visits to doctors/clinics) I start playing my favorite album, which is very soothing and acts as my natural antidepressant and anxiolytic when I am outside (my end-of-year statistics are gonna be so funny I swear.) Usually - when I am working or at home - I am the kind of person who gets a very specific song stuck on their head and then listens to the same song for hours, until finally getting enough of it and proceeds to listen to other songs in the same genre/artist/album. Like, "this is the kind of song that fits my mood rn, this is what makes me feel ok right now" is what drives me to listen to certain song/playlist. Of course I have playlists for specific genres and moods for that very purpose.

I listen to foreign music more often than music in my own language so I can't say I care a lot for lyrics. So I feel the mood of the song before I pay attention to the lyrics. If I like the song, then I'll pay attention to the lyrics (or check them online if it's a language I can't speak well) ... and see how they fit my OTPs lol. So, yeah, don't really care for album themes even when I LOVE the album. I respect people who do, it's just not the level at which I vibe with music tbh so yeahh

Either entire albums at a time in order (I find there's a "flow" to most albums and listening to songs out of order seems weird), or on the radio if I just want to be surprised.

Every now and then I'll put a band's entire discography on shuffle. The Beatles and They Might Be Giants are my faves to do that with.

And sometimes I'll just listen to one song over and over for days because it hits just right...

With my ears. huehuehue

Honestly though, usually I'll just find one song by accident. If a friend recommends a song by a group and I really vibe with it I'll probably check out some other songs so there's definitely a few groups where I have listened to/liked a lot or most of their music, while there's some singers/groups where I just know one song haha.

My gf also yells at me for not actually like... listening to songs though. Like I am definitely usually just there for the tune and not so much the lyrics. If you asked me what a song was about I'd be like, "Uh... >_>;;"

Up until recently, I very rarely listened to whole albums. I would usually just toss a bunch of my current favorites on a playlist, or, if I was on my phone, then I'd just listen on shuffle and skip around when I felt like it. I still do generally prefer my music that way, but I've gotten more willing to put on an album in the last year or so.

I also have tons of artists who I only know one or two songs by. Most of the music I love is stuff I picked up here and there; on TV, or in a movie, or it came on in Starbucks, or in a clothing store while I was shopping, or it was in a fanmix for a ship I once had, or in a fanvid--that kind of thing. I really prefer to find my music that way. It's why I'm passionate about most of the songs in my library, and why I know pretty much all of them inside out. Because none of them are just there because they were part of the album; none of them are there by default.

Now that I'm finally on Spotify, it's so easy to just queue up an album, which has got me listening to albums by a few different artists lately, and that's cool. But in the end I find the whole thing kind of frustrating, because I often end up with a good impression of the album overall, without feeling overly connected to any of the songs in particular. And that just isn't my style; I don't find it satisfying.

I usually just go on sites like Spotify and make lists of songs I like.

The only time I really sit down and listen to entire albums is if I REALLY like the artist, or if it's a story (Queensryche's Operation: Mindcrime comes to mind) and listening to the songs out of order either doesn't make sense, or they lose their impact.

I usually start out listening to the full album in order, then after a few listens I'll pick out the songs I like the most and add them to a playlist.

For most general listens, I have playlists I created on Spotify.

Some artists I really love I'll play their entire discography on random or I'll pick an album I'm in the mood for and listen to it on repeat (most albums I have to listen from track one to the last and repeat, randomizing the album throws me off).

If it's an artist that I just discovered/want to get into, I'll listen to a couple of their popular songs on Spotify, maybe check out a music video, and then I might listen to more of their discography on random. If I get more into the artist I'll start looking and listening to the individual albums as their own thing.
