i'm so curious about what fandoms you're in where this overlap is a thing...

(Anonymous) 2022-08-19 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
So am I, but only so I can bust in and write some Hamburglar/Ronald/Grimace porn all over it.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-20 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
That was my thought too. I've been in fandom a very, very long time and I have never encountered fast food crossovers in fanworks.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-18 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
This... is a thing that happens? Huh.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-18 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
People become fanatical collectors of toys and collectibles from burger chains, and draw fan art and porn of the mascots, so tbh this doesn't surprise at all.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-18 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Spare me your gatekeeping. You'll never convince me not to draw whatever the hell I want to draw, and I'll use the tags of the characters I'm drawing. Don't want to see it? Block me.

This.

People get horny over company mascots in a functionally identical way to how they get horny over cartoon characters. Like Tony the Tiger, or Erin from Esurance.

Edit: I can’t believe I forgot to mention the Folgers incest fandom: https://www.gq.com/story/folgers-incest-ad-oral-history/

As much as on principle I can't agree with "you can't have a fandom for X", I totally have to concede on instances like Wendy's, where the fandom was totally spurred by the sassy PR they used to draw attention away from their labour abuse bullshit. So I get where OP comes from.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-18 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes I'm inclined to agree. It's corporate PR brand crap. Sure people can write or draw or like whatever they want, but it's not the same as fandom fandom.

Whoever he wants, he is the king. He's gonna exercise that right of prima nocta all over the place. It's good to be the king.

'Tender Wings of Desire' begs to differ.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-18 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I came, I saw, I lolled.

Who's suddenly thinking about Pennywise and the Hamburger-Happy Clown getting it on?

(Anonymous) 2022-08-19 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Just me?

Hahaha. Now I am. And yes, I'd like to see fan art.

I feel like mcdonaldland had a basic "plot" going on and definitely has an actual cast of distinguishable characters (I don't know if I'm remembering correctly, but there was legit like a bad guy/good guy mcdonald beef heh heh between ronald and like grimace, hambrugler and other villains, and like....grimace has a whole fucking family), but for most of this...I see your point.

I mean, I'm mostly onto it for the memes than for the actual fandom itself.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-19 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
The McNugget Buddies are the unholy love children of Birdie and one of the Fry Guys, and you can't tell me different.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-19 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
On the one hand, OP, it's very annoying to see shit you don't like pop up in your fandom but it's also a consequence of fandom.

However, as much as you can call it brand worship, I'd argue it's still fandom. Fandom exists because people want it to exist. Whether it's around a product, and idea, etc. It doesn't make it any less a fandom. Technically, certain aspects of fandom could be called "intellectual property worship". I'm an artist, so while I'm not a fan of omg people are slobbering over some ad company's ideas, I won't take away someone else's fun nor say that the ad person behind it wasn't clever -- because even advertising is storytelling. The ends of the story telling may be different (and artist might just want to express a story for the sake of the story that needs to get out, vs the profit or selling a product. And Frankly, even something like marvel becomes a profit making venture). Anyway. What I'm trying to say is fandom is what people make it, and they'll express it in different ways.

I used to read fics for Mayhem, from Progressive. I even checked out the Folgers brother/sister fic once. That commercial was...hmmm...lol

People can have fandoms for whatever the hell they want.

It's not your or anyone else's place to tell them they can't. There's enough gatekeeping out there already, don't add to it.

(I am so not surprised there are Fast Food fandoms. )

(Anonymous) 2022-08-19 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
While I can be sympathetic to the disdain, excluding fast food fandoms from the category of fandoms just because they are brand mascots is not a logical or useful way to categorise fandoms.

Do we exclude pokemon as a fandom because it was made to sell cards? I.e., where is the cut off between brand and content? And more than that, if there is a significant following and content made for something you find trivial, and very little for something you find legitimate, why would fandom A be excluded and fandom B be included?

It feels much more reasonable to describe something as having a fandom based on how many fans it has and the content (meta or otherwise) they produce.

Doesn't stop you personally dismissing fast food fandoms as worthy of respect. But trying to say certain fandoms are objectively not fandoms just based on your opinion of them isn't gonna work.
