I like her a lot and Alex Kingston is gorgeous! Also, I don't think you can really start slinging around "Mary Sue" complaints in a show where the main character is literally the most specialist person ever to exist. If she wasn't also special, you'd complain about power imbalance instead. My only real complaint is that if you start making romantic relationships for the Doctor there should be a lot of them, of various genders and species.

Not even just the main character! The whole thing with DW is that... EVERYONE IS SPECIAL. Everyone has a certain something about them that makes them extraordinary.

You're going to object to River but not Amy, or Rory, or Clara, or Donna, or Rose, or Jack, or any number of the older companions but it's been too long for me to name specifics about their specialness so I won't bring up names lol.

I don't like her either, and it wouldn't really bother me if it didn't feel so forced. I always feel this expectation from the show, like I'm supposed to think she's amazing and her storyline is so wonderful and interesting, and that makes it grate on me.

But she’s not a Mary Sue? She isn’t all knowing/perfect/better than everyone else.

I liked her in her first two episodes during Ten’s run and wish they’d left her at that. Her character arc was messy and not just because of the timeline, a lot had to do with poor writing and a showrunner who thought he was a lot more clever than he really was. Still doesn’t make River Song a Mary Sue though.

wholehearted agreement on all counts

i ended up mostly abandoning the series halfway through matt smith and it was mainly because the show decided it wanted to convince me that she was More Awesome than the doctor, and that was BEFORE all the tardis baby shit (which is literally bad fanfic grade writing)
