I usually avoid the SW threads but I’ve always noticed there are a lot of Johnson fans here, more here I think than anywhere else. I can understand not hating the movie, I can understand hating some of the vile behaviours of “fans” when the film came out but I’ve never understood thinking Johnson is a good director. Objectively, TLJ was the worst Star Wars film up to that point. And that is purely down to Johnson’s writing and directing. I really enjoyed the film and liked what he was trying to do, I just wish he’d actually done it and don’t understand why his failure is lauded as a success. The excuse that he didn’t have time to develop those concepts is rubbish; he had an entire film in which to do it but instead we got subplots that did nothing to advance story or characters and the leaders of the resistance faking out their own troops for no reason whatsoever.

I just don't know what to do with a statement like "Objectively, TLJ was the worst Star Wars film up to that point."

Like, you absolutely don't have to like TLJ, you don't have to think that it was a success as a film, or any of that. But I don't really see the argument that, as an objective fact, it was worse than a Phantom Menace or an Attack of the Clones. I can certainly see how someone would prefer those movies, sure, fine, whatever. But when the anti-TLJ position is that as TLJ is objectively worse than all preceding Star Wars movies, how are people meant to respond to that?

Simple agreement, or dignified (wrongly felt) silence will do. And also, post that point as well. TLJ was the movie that torpedoed the franchise. Everything since has been frantic course corrections and attempted, with mixed success, bailing out. That is an objective fact.

NAYRT so we have to agree that it sucks or shut up? No discussion or alternate opinion allowed? Fantastic.

Thing is, I DO like TLJ. I’m thinking maybe you don’t understand the difference between objective and subjective? I don’t like PM or AotC but from an objective standpoint, yes, they are better. Better writing, better plotting and pacing, subplots contributed to the main story or main characters; TLJ failed to some extent in all of those areas and so majorly in the subplots that fans gave up and the following film only had a profit of $300 million.
