But I don't really see the argument that, as an objective fact, it was worse than a Phantom Menace or an Attack of the Clones. I can certainly see how someone would prefer those movies, sure, fine, whatever. But when the anti-TLJ position is that as TLJ is objectively worse than all preceding Star Wars movies, how are people meant to respond to that?

I don’t like PM or AotC but from an objective standpoint, yes, they are better. Better writing, better plotting and pacing, subplots contributed to the main story or main characters; TLJ failed to some extent in all of those areas and so majorly in the subplots that fans gave up and the following film only had a profit of $300 million.
