LOL I feel you because I'm the exact opposite. I love reading and writing horror. I can't watch horror movies or shows at ALL. They freak me out too badly.

That's an A+ tumblr post.

That sounds beautiful. Got a link to this fic?

No need to kinkshame people who are into vile muck...

(Anonymous) 2022-10-06 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Comic books and graphic novels aren't the same thing though.

You sound annoying.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-06 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I guess I can kind of see the 'good' intention there of trying to think up a tagging if you're trying to specify something as featuring ace characters in non-sexual situations - but I agree op, as a fellow ace who's not sex repulsed and into the kinkier side of thing its annoying as hell when people try to lump the entire ace community into 'don't fuck/ew sex' category.

I can understand this, because sometimes writing can get deeper into my head than watching something. Also the average book takes longer to read than the average movie lasts, so you're spending longer in its world. (Especially if you're reading Stephen King!)

Inspired by #5: favorite horror novels?

Horror readers, what are your favorite horror novels?

Including graphic novels!

new to this thread

I honestly feel like it's gone too far in the other direction. I feel like lately I've seen so many people going overboard that just because they're asexual doesn't mean they don't like sex! I've seen a few people who identify as asexual say they actively WOULD NOT WANT a non-sexual relationship.

It confuses me, and it annoys me because it makes the label meaningless. The other sexuality labels have specific meanings and it bugs me that with asexual apparently anything goes. If you had someone claiming to be gay but saying they loved having sex with the opposite sex, no one would take them seriously because THAT'S NOT WHAT THAT WORD MEANS, but someone can be like "I'm asexual but I really love sex and can't imagine living without it" and everyone's like "yes, yes, that totally makes sense".

I get the whole "it's about sexual attraction and nothing else" argument, but it still doesn't even make sense to me. Again, if someone was like "I'm gay, but I love having sex with the opposite sex, but it doesn't count because I'm not sexually attracted to them" they would be rightly called out for it.

I don't know, it's all just confusing and contradictory and kind of hypocritical to me. Sorry for the rant, but lately I feel left out even in asexual communities and it sucks.

I like both, but I can handle a much higher graphic violence level in books than I can on screen.

Ooh, I'm curious to see what kind of replies this thread gets because I've never really read horror even though in theory I should love it. I have a bunch I plan on reading soon, though.

Right now I'm reading a book called The Hiding House by Malcolm Richards which is apparently considered horror. It's decent, but so far it's more dysfunctional family drama than anything I'd really consider horror.

As a spirit worker, I sense that your aura is desperately in need of a white light healing.

I can't find it but there was an interview with Matt Damien who was talking about the general problem with the movie industry as it currently is. I'm probably going to badly word it - but basically he was talking about how in the 90s/2000s making money from film releases didn't just count for how many people went to see them at the cinema but also from the money made with home releases.
With streaming being the option more people are heading towards than actually owning media, the focus is now more on getting as many people as possible to see a movie even if its just the once. With less chance of making back the money, there are producers and corporations less likely to put money into projects that don't have a guarantee of success (which is why despite so many remakes and franchise revivals in recent years have mostly been so awful, but can be relied on to get the attention of old fans or people who have heard of these previously well-praised movies).

So with Disney going down the path of 'bad publicity is better than no publicity' route its hardly a surprise.

LOL

I guess I've read more horror short stories than novels.

I like your spooky border image!

Isn't there a genuine literary distinction?

(Anonymous) 2022-10-06 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Like a graphic novel is complete story, the same as a text-based novel, just using images to tell part of the story. And a comic book is one part of larger serialized story.

This is a silly secret, but a very cute image choice to illustrate it!

Hotel Transylvania, by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro. That book fucked up my head for weeks.

The Matt Damon interview you're talking about was on Hot Ones, I believe.

The Hellbound Heart is really good. I prefer it to Hellraiser if only because the book ending is so much better.

Actually, I like a lot of Barker's stuff. His style works for me.

Everything scary by Edgar Allan Poe. He's a favorite author of mine, I love everything he's written. If I had to pick a single story, it would be The Cask of Amontillado.

Dracula.

The Shining. Again, book version much better than movie version, IMHO. I like Nightmares and Dreamscapes, Night Shift, and Skeleton Crew even more. King excels at short stories. The Stand is probably my favorite of his full-length stories.

I am Legend is one that is great and has never been properly adapted.

Final Girl Support Group is a newer horror book that is really good.

Everything by Lovecraft. Yes, very problematic. But I really like the cosmic horror thing.

Lovecraft Country is a great take on that genre while dealing with the racism head on. Same with the Ballad of Black Tom and also Ring Shout. The Great God Pan is super sexist, but I still like it.

The Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark were favorites as a kid, and they still hold up as pretty scary on more recent rereads.

Does Jurassic Park count as horror? I really enjoyed the book.

Red Dragon is my favorite of the Hannibal Lecter books (and my favorite of the movies for that matter).
