What's your definition of 'fucked up'?

Kinda inspired by the thread above, what's your line in the sand when it comes to media or fandom?

I can watch a lot of things. Won't be watching the most recent House of the Dragon episode.

The mostly recently aired one or the upcoming one? If it's the former, that doesn't seem like a very high threshold...

Most recent one and a certain sex scene.

Overly-violent and bloody without a purpose. I don't mind pointed scenes of blood and guts. But things like Cannibal Holocaust, or Texas Chainsaw Massacre where the blood is the one and only point of the movie? No thanks. And I don't get the appeal at all. The Saw sequels are fairly violent and not my cup of tea, but at least they kind of have plots. When all you get is gore, how is that enjoyable for anyone?

Rape scenes that are overly sexualized and filmed to titillate men. Uh, no? I have no issues with rape fics or rape as kink. But just the way it gets male-gazy filmed so often feels so wrong and makes me mad.

If you mean the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, you barely actually see any blood in it. It's just so intense you assume you saw way more than you did. And Cannibal Holocaust is making a whole bunch of points, though it's severely problematic in various ways, not the least being the killing animals on screen.

Totally agree with you on the way rape scenes are filmed.

Agreed on all counts.

And the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre does have a point as well.

I cant watch any SAW things.

It’s real cray horror. I’m cool with ghosts and monsters because I know they’re not real.

Extended emotional torture. I have a high tolerance for gore since I know when it's depicted on screen that it's fake but I can't deal with movies where I'm left wondering if the actors in question are genuinely frightened.

When something is included, not because it fits the characters, but because it obviously gets the writer off.

I tend to over-think a lot of things (like really imagine a scene with a its taste/smell/feeling things/etc) so I get really cautious when it comes to anything gory. Like, I'll watch a movie with gore in it if the plot gives me something to focus on - but gore for gore sakes is something I just can't do.
Which is also why anything with cannibalism in it is a straight up no for me. I can put up with super-fake looking movies, but these days everything looks more realistic in the movies so I haven't really sought out horror as much as I use to unless its paranormal or fantasy horror.

Same! I used to be able to handle it a little though, when I was a teenager and all the practical effects looked fake. But it’s nightmarish to me now, and not in a good way. And cannibalism is the thing I hate most in these movies. I have a thing where I’ve always hated seeing people(and animals) being eaten alive, but cannibalism is the worst for me.

I remember I sent in a secret around the early 2010s when special effects started to look a little bit too real for me to enjoy horror movies that had gore for the sake of it anymore. Which is a large chunk of horror movies these days rated above PG-13. So I guess I thought I would ask for advice about it, not knowing what answer would even work for me, to be completely fair. And an answer I got was basically “just relax and enjoy the gore” lol. Like, did they read the secret? I can’t, and that was my problem. So I realized that I was probably asking a question that doesn’t have a possible or reasonable answer, and that it was my bad.

And now I barely watch most new horror because so many revel in gore for the sake of gore, and the films I do watch I close my eyes when it looks like it might get gory. More power to the people who like these types of horror movies, but I can’t handle them anymore. At least I have the entire 20th century for horror with unconvincing practical effects to watch, not to mention bad attempts at CGI in the later decades, so I don’t have to never watch horror again.

(Sorry for the wall o’ text reply)

Kanye West. He has ruined his own art for me.

Agreed

Hm, I have two notions of 'fucked up' I think.

One where it's a piece of media exploring some kind of social taboo or issue: rape/incest/abuse/manipulation/etc, but it's not necessarily done to titillate or kink on it, it's more an exploration of the topic and I can find those fascinating in a morbid way.

But my 'this is fucked up I hate it' line is when most of those things above are treated as fetish fodder and not the horrific things they are. Rape especially is fucking awful to deal with in media because so much of it is filmed in a way that's meant to be appealing to men and that's just... erugh, nope, fuck off with that shit.

But things like excessive gore don't even register as overly fucked up to me 9/10 because honestly a lot of really gory films come off as very juvenile with how they present it so my brain checks out at taking them seriously. Like I really like the first Saw movie because it's not relying on gore(it's there but it's not The Point if you get me), it's more fucking with the heads of the characters, but the sequels devolved into snuff movies which I found boring and childish.
