They're not muppets. They're not even puppets. They're practical effects.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-19 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
Muppet is a tradename for a creature made by Sesame Workshop or the Henson Creature Shop. If it ain't made by Henson's Creature Shop, or Sesame Workshop, it ain't a Muppet.

You don't understand that people have different reactions to different things? Pan's Labyrinth is the first time you've encountered this rare phenomenon?

(Anonymous) 2022-10-18 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm scared, just from this secret.

That is Doug Jones, the same actor who did Abe Sapien on Hellboy and Saru on Star Trek, not a muppet.

And I personally prefer physical acting over digital effect in this regard.

1. I agree, and 2. I love Doug Jones.

Don't forget Billy Butcherson in Hocus Pocus and Silver Surfer in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (though Lawrence Fishburn voiced him)!

(Anonymous) 2022-10-19 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
and the fuckable fishman in the shape of water NEVER FORGET THE FUCKABLE FISHMAN

(Anonymous) 2022-10-19 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
And the ghost of the Sharpes' mother in Crimson Peak!

(Anonymous) 2022-10-19 08:59 am (UTC)(link)
And the lead Gentleman in the silent Buffy episode, Hush.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-18 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Because to most people, creepy images are scary, lol duh.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-18 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember watching this movie in the cinema and being so scared in this scene that I couldn't even leave without thinking he'd be right behind me

(Anonymous) 2022-10-18 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
That creature WAS scary! You have no clue what you're talking about.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-18 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you may need to unblock your chakras, sweetie.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-18 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
lmao!

Certainly someone who doesn't connect well with others

(Anonymous) 2022-10-18 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Because they are able to suspend their disbelief and imagine that the "muppet" are real creatures within the context of the story.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-18 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Doesn't do anything for me, but I can see how some people can be completely creeped out by that.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-18 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the Pale Man is one of those monsters that really doesn't translate well to still images and works better in motion/context. I found him rather creepy in the film, but yeah, in this photo it all just looks a little goofy.

Also, whenever I see him now I just flash back to the time when my brother and a friend got very drunk watching Pan's Labyrinth, and I woke up to them both sitting on my bed with eyes drawn on their palms in marker pen. Which had the potential to be creepy if they weren't both giggling uncontrollably.

lolol

Doug Jones did an absolutely phenomenal job with his physical acting that made it creepy.

Also, the idea of being trapped in a room with a creature that will probably eat you alive, running against time to escape while it slowly creeps up to you...I'd think it's a valid scary situation for a lot of folks.

I don't find it scary, because I don't find scary a lot of things in movies, but don't call my man Doug Jones a muppet!

(Anonymous) 2022-10-19 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, is that a Pale Man toy? Are those ball-and-socket joints at the wrists and elbows? Do you mean you don't understand why kids/people would be upset/scared if you handed them a freaky-ass figurine?

On the one hand, yeah, I would have found that a cool-ass toy as a kid. But on the other, the Pale Man is freaky, and not everyone might respond well to having a tiny plastic spectre of him shoved at them.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-19 07:33 am (UTC)(link)
You do you, but this is the movie scene that visibly scared Stephen King shitless.

(One of my favorite del Toro anecdotes. Another one is the fact that he had both Japanese actresses in Pacific Rim [young and grown Mako] call him Totoro to make it easier on them.)

Doug Jones is an amazing actor and was absolutely amazing as the Pale Man in Pan's Labyrinth.

This secret? Is a picture of the poseable figure of his character and as such, the creep factor does not translate.

The lighting, the atmosphere, the music, all lend to the creep/scare factor of the movie that you just don't get from a plastic figure.

Tl;DR- Let people be scared of things, Nonny.
