When I was a young'un in fandom (early 2000s), I guess the equivalent stupid arguments were homophobes complaining about how gross slash, was or the neverending SJW wankfest

I know it's probably me just being older and judgy of young people doing fandom differently than I did, and I definitely don't want to go back to the every-phobic days of the early 2000s... but the weird purity wankers and antis of today's fandom seem completely unhinged to me, more than past fandom nutjobs

Or maybe they're just out in the open more, since anon memes aren't a huge thing nowadays?

Personally I've been of the notion for a long time that it's behavior that's always been there just let loose into public fandom because anon-meme's disappeared, because tbh the kinds of shit I see in passing on twitter is the exact same shit I used to see on anon-memes or comms with awful mods who let in-fighting happen. It's just not confined to one space in fandom anymore, it's everywhere which is why it's so much worse.

Yes, tumblr and twitter have normalized everything spilling over into everything else, so instead of most wanks being a minor kerfuffle in a single fandom, every wank is high stakes drama pulling in people all over the place. Add that to the current tendency to think that everything has to be framed in terms of great importance (e.g. you don't just dislike a ship, that ship is homophobic/racist/misogynist/pedophilic) and you've got a recipe for bad takes and endless drama.

I honestly can't with the pedophilia, either. It used to mean attraction to pre-pubescent children. Then it sort of moved to mean attraction to anyone under 18. Now apparently it can mean an older adult with a younger one, too. It used to be a word that should rightfully shock you, but it's been completely watered down. I honestly can't take it seriously when it's people screeching over a consenting 20-year-old. (Also, people under 18 have sexual feelings, to pretend they do not is just silly).

If there's no child involved, it's not pedophilia. You can't have "pedophilia" between adults. Words mean things and "pedophilia" is not the same as anything that gives you an icky feeling. Every adult on earth used to be a teenager and has memories of what it's like. You own your own experiences and you're allowed to use them any way you please. Yeah, feel like the word pedophilia has been taken to drive up moral panic and I don't engage.

Had to deal/still dealing with my own personal struggles with CoCSA and possibly CSA at the hands of a caregiver (found out said caregiver abused a relative who was one of my main bullies growing up and so that's a lot I also have been dealing with) and it's really given me a lot of room to take in all the discourse around pedophia and...people will shriek everyone is a pedophile and needs to be killed/castrated but when confronted with the system in which we won't allow a girl raped by her father to get an abortion everyone is silent or say that's why we have to get rid of pedophiles as if that will help any current victims/survivors in any real way.

Like...I don't think people want to protect victims of CSA as much as their loud drum beating and microphoned speeches claim.
Because if we really want to talk about helping victims and trying to stop these acts from continuing, there is way more we have to do than find the pedophiles and naming them.
But I know not to cling onto any hopes of things getting better. Everyone would rather get emotional catharthis publicly canceling some asshole on their socials.
