Halloween recs that are mild on scares?

(Anonymous) 2022-10-25 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Does anybody have any recs for non-kid-targeted movies that are Halloween-appropriate but mild on the scares?

Two that I can think of are Underworld and The Craft, but I’ve watched them on Halloween before and I’d like to expand my repertoire.

Practical Magic, maybe? The Innkeepers? I don't remember either of those being too scary.

Ohh, yeah, Practical Magic is a solid rec! Good thinking! I haven't heard of the Innkeepers but I'll check it out, thanks!

The Addams Family movies, maybe?

You know what, I don't think I ever actually watched them! (I know, I know.) So maybe I'll give them a try. Or at least the first one.

No no no, don't skip the second one. It has one of the best scenes of any film ever.

If I like the first one I promise to also watch the second one! I've always felt like The Addams Family might not be my scene. I don't really like camp, and bodily violation stuff makes me grimace (even when it's played as funny). And I get the general sense that the Addams Family movies have a fair bit of both. Which I guess is why I've always put them on the back burner.

But I assume they're cult classics for a reason, so I really should give them a chance. :)

I did read some very inventive Johnlock fanfic once, in which John was Morticia's nephew and had inherited all the familial oddities, but had been brought up to hide them and always act normal. It was pretty well done. IIRC Wednesday comes to visit him at one point, and Sherlock finds her very fascinating.

Give them a go.

The camp play, right?

Yes! Iconic.

Adding recs for The Crow, What We Do In The Shadows, and Only Lovers Left Alive. The latter is kind of somber and existential for a Halloween movie, so don’t watch it if you want to keep things fun and lively. But still a good movie. I mean, I guess The Crow is also pretty somber (in more ways than one), but it's so heavily stylized and aesthetic that it comes off less dour than it otherwise would.

I think nearly all Tim Burton movies could arguably fall into this category

The Nightmare Before Christmas?

Ghostbusters?

The Frighteners. Michael J Fox uses ghosts to defraud people, until his ghost employees start getting (re?)killed by the ghost of a serial killer.

Young Frankenstein! Classic Frankenstein parody, completely hilarious.

Not as good but still fun: Love at First Bite. Dracula hits the 1970s disco scene!

-Van Helsing (starring Hugh Jackman, an action-horror)
-Little Shop of Horrors (musical about a mean green-mother from outer space)
-seconding the What We Do In the Shadows movie (a mockumentary comedy)
-Interview with the Vampire
-So I Married an Axe-Murderer (it's more of a cheesy romcom than horror, but its about a guy who has a fear of commitment and finds a reason to get out of a relationship. But I sort of throw it under the Halloween category)
-Comedy of Terrors (if you don't mind older movies, this is literally one of my favorite Vincent Price movies right next to The Raven - another I'd rec)
-Hellboy movies (more action-fantasy than Horror, although I prefer the second one I think the first one is good too).
-Young Frankenstein (comedy horror largely based on the universal Frankenstein movies - which I like too, but you don't need to see them to see this one if you know the general storyline)

But mild caveat that I personally don't find gore scary. This movie is gory but it's all rather on the whimsical side. Same goes for the director's follow-up, Krampus.

I would not call this a mild Halloween movie. It's not extremely scary but there was way too much gore and uncomfortable situations for my liking.

Warm Bodies is a lot of fun, though it's a little teen-focused. It's not about scares but the zombies make it fun for Halloween without being *too* gnarly. Zombieland is further along the gore scale but the laughs well outweigh the fright.

Transylvania 6-5000 is a HIGHLY goofy 80s movie with young Jeff Goldblum, Ed Begley jr, and Geena Davis, I watch it every October with even the non-horror fan in the family.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Once Bitten are both funny vampire movies-- Once Bitten is sillier, not as smart but still fun if you enjoy Jim Carrey. And The Lost Boys is fairly mild on scares (and you can just not look at the screen during the maggot-rice bit). The original Fright Night is maybe a little bit gnarlier than The Lost Boys in a couple places, but it's not a gorefest, either. Don't know how the remake compares.

Scare Me is GREAT-- it pretty much stays with two characters telling each other scary stories the whole time, so if you're a wuss about gore or jump scares but like scary stories, could be your speed.

Little Evil is a silly movie about a new step-dad parenting the antichrist, like if the Omen was a domestic comedy, if you like horror-themed things you can laugh at more than actual horror.
