I want to be reincarnated in The Culture.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-20 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a great choice - I mean, it's pretty much the ideal society in which one would actually want to really live if it were real.

I had some other thoughts here but then I realized if I think about this too much it just turns into isekai and I hate isekai. Anime fans once again ruin everything (for me personally because I happen to disagree with their taste)

I dunno, I managed I think the first three books and disliked every single character, which is not what I personally want in fiction, much less my hypothetical afterlife.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-21 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
That's sort of the question, though, isn't it?

Are you inhabiting the fictional universe, or the fiction?

(Anonymous) 2022-11-20 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think I'd want to pick a pre-existing fictional universe - I'd rather go to one of my own personal creation. Probably because all the fictional universes I love would be lousy places to spend an afterlife, being too full of vampires or other sources of stress.

I'd rather go to a beagle party.

How about the one I’m writing, “The Universe Where Everyone Is Happy And Nothing Bad Happens”? Working title.

I know this isn't saying great things about my maturity but I'd go for the Pokémon world. Lots of adorable creatures, and if you don't want to battle with them you can just cuddle them. It seems very safe and pleasant and when bad guys do show up they're incompetent and/or lovable (Team Skull.) So that's my vote.

DA

Sometimes maturity is overrated. And also, from what I remember, people are nice to each other a lot in Poke'mon. They give you gifts for practically no reason, they're really happy when you help them with stuff, the world is beautiful, there's forests everywhere, and the animals are easy to become friends with, even if they're huge and ferocious-looking. There's always mysteries to solve and things to do. I think it could make a pretty great afterlife.

I'd totally go with this... my ideal fictional world would be full of little cuddly furry monsters.
philstar22: (Star Trek: Kira)

If this were real and I could pick, I'd pick the Star Trek universe.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-20 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
IMO the reason that the Culture is better than Star Trek is that Star Trek doesn't have artificial intelligences you can make friends with. Or I mean I guess it does, but only one, and he's probably busy doing other stuff.

On the other hand, I would love an opportunity to try Ben Sisko's jambalaya.

I have no idea what the Culture is,honestly.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-20 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the primary central civilization from Iain M. Banks' space opera series of the same name. It's quite like the Federation, but generally much more advanced technologically, more post-scarcity, and more anarchistic and weird socially.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-21 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
The Culture wouldn't even break a sweat smacking down the Borg though, even Q would be a much lesser factor to them. Plus the lack of all the Insane Admirals... Star Trek is near Post Scarcity, The Culture is post-Post Scarcity. It is what happens when a civilisation reaches Post Scarcity and then blows right past it in resource availability.

Would you be you in the fictional universe or would you be reincarnated into the universe as a person from there? I think this is a very cool idea!
tabaqui: (Default)

[personal profile] tabaqui 2022-11-20 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that sounds cool, OP.
I think I would pick my own 'verse where my own, much-loved OC resides.... But, also, it would be cool to be in something like the Expanse finale (book) 'verse, too.

"Which to choose" seems to me like a good dilemma.

The person who first introduced me to the witchy culture-things around pop culture paganism, in the US, was dying of a terminal lung disease when I met her. Unless her doctors were severely mistaken about how long she had, she's somewhere in Star Wars now.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-21 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Me too OP! I think I already know which universe I would choose, as long I was able to be something fun too!

(Anonymous) 2022-11-21 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
middle-earth, no question

(Anonymous) 2022-11-21 10:18 am (UTC)(link)
but WHERE in Middle-earth, that's the question?

(Anonymous) 2022-11-21 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Bree. All the headroom of humanspace, adjacent to all the hominess of The Shire.

Probably Shire? Although it sometimes gives me too much country-life-and-all-its-expectations-vibes.
So, Ithilien, or Rivendell, or Garas Galadhon.
cakemage: (Snakes on a plain.)

Late to the party as usual, but I'd go with either Pokemon, Star Trek, Kingdom Hearts, or the Ivalice of FFXII.
