I like both versions too. If pressed, I might even call him my favorite character in the drama. Top 3 characters for sure. But I also genuinely like him in the role of antagonist. He's not JGY level of villain, but he's very clearly set up in the narrative as a personal adversary for WWX and LWJ and I think it's delicious because the drama is so personal.

What I think is extra funny about this is that the people in the canon Jiang Cheng tag genuinely like him too, but not the way the majority of the fandom wants them to. In this fandom he's either a pathetic little meow meow who bears no responsibility for anything that has happened in the story or you hate him. There's no room for nuance. It's annoying af.

Ugh, yeah the lack of nuance in most fandoms is annoying, a character can be sympathetic but still ultimately a villain or a bad person. Or they can be messy but still a good person. I like JGY too but very much in the 'he's such a fucked up little dude and it's fascinating' way, but the small amount of discourse I saw around him made me switfly turn around.

Like one of the things about both the show and the book is that everyone is damaged and messy, simplifying that on any end is missing the point. But oh well.

I go back and forth on JGY lol. On one hand he's so smart and devious and deserves a little revenge. On the other hand, he killed my mustachioed sex god NMJ and that shit's unforgiveable lol.

But I agree. All the characters have their foibles, which is what makes them so interesting. WWX's choices are almost always the morally correct ones, but he (1) never considers the consequences his actions will have other people and (2) is rarely emotionally honest with the people who love him. LWJ, in his youth, lacks the courage of his convictions and he's a petty bitch with zero interest in diplomacy (which is my favorite thing about him lmao). Jiang Cheng blames literally everyone for his problems instead of dealing with his own shit and he's lowkey homophobic (at least in the book). JYL also never faces the shit that's thrown her way and thinks soup is an acceptable balm for parental abuse. All these characters are fucked up, it's what makes them so great.

Except for lan jingyi and lan sizhui lmao. They're perfect and I love them.

Tell me about it. My favourite character is Nie Huaisang and my OTP is Lan Xichen/Nie Huaisang so I am so down with terrible people making terrible decisions. Fortunately, my OTP is a pretty damn rare one so I get very little ship discourse. Then again, 60% of the fanwork's basically OCs vaguely resembling the actual characters so... eh.
