Serious question: how do people manage to watch something and do something else at the same time? I guess technically you're "listening to" the movie or whatever, not watching, but still.

I'm the other way round: I don't get how people can do nothing but watch the screen. Don't they get bored?

I can't watch any movies anymore without having to cut them into several shorter parts and, even for TV-shows, I find it pretty hard to watch an entire episode if I'm not eating / knitting / playing the switch, etc.

And I know I don't really have an attention span issue since I can still read really long books in one setting when I have time or play games for hours.

And (like OP) this is also my big problem with watching stuff with subtitles: I can't second-screen.

I just really don't ultimately care that much about TV and movies I guess.

Watching with subtitles forces me to pay attention because I have (diagnosed) ADD. I love them and my Netflix thinks I’m Scandinavian.

AYRT - Well I do, which is why I don't watch stuff THAT often. But usually I am a very... slow? person, so one thing is more than enough to me lol.

Then again I am the kind of person who pays attention to lectures and studies for tests so maybe I am the oddity and not the other way around.

Gonna be real with you here, I'd say there's probably a 99% chance you've got ADHD. I say this as someone who has it myself.

It's an acquired skill for me--it's boring to work on crafts by themselves, I don't have a large amount of free time, and there's a lot of things I want to watch but don't necessarily want to carve out hours for. By combining crafting or meals with viewing time, I get to enjoy both and still get to sleep!

(Anonymous) 2022-12-02 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT - Isn't it... stressful? Wouldn't you rather consume something that is meant to be listened to while crafting, for instance?

I don't really do crafts - just not my skill - but I can't eat without watching TV or at least reading. I like food as much as the next person but eating by itself is so boring.

Fortunately I can eat and keep my eyes on the screen to read subtitles.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-02 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
I'm an artist and i need to "watch" something while i paint otherwise it's hard to concentrate. might have something to do with my undiagnosed adhd though

(Anonymous) 2022-12-02 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't get this either. I can't focus on whatever is going on on screen if I'm doing something else at the same time. Like, I'll put on the Great British Baking Show or something while I'm cooking or cleaning for background noise, but I'm not actually paying attention to 90% of what's happening?

(Anonymous) 2022-12-02 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
It's not really a matter of choice for me? If I'm at home alone (as opposed to, like, a movie theater where I'm essentially forced to pay attention or with someone else where we're watching the thing together) ) and I put a movie or TV show on, I *will* stop paying attention to it at some point and need to find something else to do. I just have to have something to do with my hands.

It's the same in zoom meetings at work. For any zoom meeting at work where I'm not the primary one talking, I usually pull up Google maps on the background right at the start of the meeting. Because I can click and scroll around on Google maps and still pay attention to what's going on. And if I don't have that, then I'll find myself pulling up Twitter or Tumblr which *would* stop me from hearing what's going on.

I can knit by feel... Which means I can read and knit, among other things.

I'm also a master at my craft and my "tv knitting" is sometimes more complex than other people's "intense focus knitting."

But subtitled shows do make it hard to work on complex stuff, which does sideline certain properties because I watch stuff primarily to occupy the rest of me while my hands are busy. (The opposite of the idle hands problem??)

(Anonymous) 2022-12-02 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
I am so impressed by that kind of knitting skill!

(Anonymous) 2022-12-02 01:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I can knit by feel...

Me too. For me simple patterns (stocking, rib, moss, etc) are almost muscle memory. Once I get the flow going I can easily pay attention to other things. I've never tried knitting and reading though. That's a new one to me.

My friend usually prefers to do something while watching, I think it's ADHD thing. But it results in that I hate things she watches: I think this shows are boring, formulatic, repetitive and rather stupid.
I prefer movies/shows there I need to pay attention.
But sometimes cognitive dysfunction hits me and I have youtube videos for that. I "watch" some rants etc while doing things. But

SA. hit post to early
But it's not exactly watching, it's mostly listening with occasional glances.
Well, I guess there are different shows for different people

I cannot listen to audiobooks or podcasts and do something else. I always miss the audio and have to rewind constantly. How do people drive (I don't drive) and listen to books on tape?

(Anonymous) 2022-12-02 11:23 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, I am exact opposite. I can't focus on audio if I am alone with my thoughts, I need to do things to focus. I don't drive, but walking, doing chores, repetitive work - perfect for a podcast

I've tried listening to so many podcasts and they just don't work for me. If I don't have a visually representation of what's happening it's like my brain just turns of the audio altogether. I can listen to hours of a podcast and then realise I can't recall a single thing that happened or was said.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-03 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
For many years I had to listen to podcasts or audiobooks while I worked (school and job) otherwise my brain fucked off and I forgot what I was doing. I went on SSRIs and suddenly I could work and listen to music, or listen to nothing at all. I still listen to podcasts and audiobooks when the mood strikes me, but I no longer HAVE to to be able to work.

Specifically, if it's one of these Asian drama series, it's absolutely possible, hell even advisable, because the pacing is so fucking slow. If it's Chinese I don't need subs and I often watch Korean series dubbed anyway, specifically so I don't have to be glued to the screen while they're stretching out 10 minutes worth of story into a full-length episode.

what does the "prettiness" of the visual have to do with the Sengoku Jidai??

maybe I've just existed in musou-land too long but there are shitloads of Sengoku-jidai properties that are very, very pretty, almost too pretty, including 100% genderswapped versions and whatnot. What do you WANT, OP? Do you want Sengoku history presented as realistically not-pretty? there are several docu-drama series that are really ugly. Do you want an era of Japanese history that isn't Sengoku-based? I agree, I want to learn more about the Kamakura era and soforth. But your secret on its face makes no sense. plz explain.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-03 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but can you please give me your recs?
