(Anonymous) 2022-12-03 04:10 am (UTC)(link)When this needs to be explained to a civilian population, which doesn't happen very often, it's passed off as necessary to defending against some other country that "could be doing the same research" and developing superbugs. But it's harder to get people to agree with that logic when there's the possibility that a virus that's wreaking havoc on a global scale was a lab escapee or a leak.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-03 01:19 pm (UTC)(link)Because he actually speaks his mind on the record, I can look to things like https://www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnbc-opinion/jon-stewart-leisli-rutledge-interview-win-trans-americans-n1299558 to know where he stands on trans issues and so understand that his stance on people like Chapelle is probably more nuanced. Doesn't mean I'm going to watch any Chapelle material or not call him a transphobe whenever I want, but Stewart is allowed his choices too.

I also work in elections to ensure voting materials and ballots are properly recorded and stored. I have seen and engaged with civic engagement beyond voting and passing legislation. I also recognize that even doing this much (or little, depending on your point of view) can be fairly time intensive work.
