You sound fun!

Not OP

(Anonymous) 2022-12-10 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Admittedly, I kinda want to have drinks with the OP after reading this secret. Guess this is a case of YMMV.

More fun than you, dickhead.

This whole discourse is so well-worn and annoying by now. Personally I just don't care about the movie that much anymore. Except for Alan Rickman, he's still great.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-10 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, it's tired, but so is endless quoting of Monty Python or LOTR references or Star Wars. none of us are innocent.

This.

Fair 'nuff.

That said, how about more love for The Lion in Winter as a Christmas movie?

I mean, some people actually don’t do that.

I’m sure I have other annoying traits, but I specifically don’t endlessly quote things because I know that kind of thing annoys people.

I kinda feel the same way but mostly out of spite that no one goes this hard about my own favorite Christmas movie, Lethal Weapon.

I mean come on, they go on and on about Die Hard, it could at least get a mention.

And it's been this way before everyone knew Mel Gibson was problematic, so that's not it. :P

(Anonymous) 2022-12-10 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
But what are your thoughts on Gremlins?

(Anonymous) 2022-12-10 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
alright, since you clearly disagree... why is it *not* a christmas movie?

(Anonymous) 2022-12-11 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I don’t think they disagree at all. It seems more that they’re just tired of people stating that it’s a Christmas movie like it’s actually some new revelation they themselves came up with.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-11 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Christmas movies are dramas, comedies or romances IMO

It's some guy in a giant, labyrinthine building trying to avoid Alan Rickman.

That's not a Christmas movie, it's a Harry Potter film.

Nowhere in the secret does OP say they don't think Die Hard is a Christmas movie.

Sorry.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-11 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
I'm still going to say it, if someone brings it up. It's a reaction to all the years of snobs condescendingly explaining that it can't be a Christmas movie because it's an action movie.

Re: Sorry.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-11 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
There is absolutely no history of that lol. Like, the whole reason that "Die Hard is a Christmas movie" became a thing in the first place is because it was contrarian and unexpected. That was the whole point of it. Come on now. This is revisionist history.

And honestly, I'd rather watch a movie I enjoy at Christmastime. I hate fluffy, gooey, or romantic movies. Just not my thing. Power to those who love them. But I'm not going to watch something I don't enjoy just because it is an official Christmas movie.

The Christmas movie discussion is just an excuse to talk about your Die Hard rewatching plans on the 24th though.

At this stage it's just part of the (pop) cultural conversation that happens in the holidays, like 'I can't stand Christmas music before X date' or 'All I Want For Christmas is You is a pop song first, then a Christmas song' or 'Love Actually sucks actually: yes or no'

You hear it again and again because there's just not much new to talk about at Christmas, because most people just do the same thing every year. Which is basically the appeal of holiday traditions.

I love this movie but the constant discourse about this is beyond tired.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-11 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen almost zero mention of it this year. Soon the only people who bring it up will be the people complaining about the people who brought it up in the first place, who have all moved on to something different.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-11 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
I avoid the whole conversation by saying my favorite christmas movie is The Ref.

I haven't watched "Die Hard" since I was a kid. Because the way there is such discourse around it during Christmastime makes me...not want to watch it? Like, the discourse around it triggers "Hey, this thing I liked as a child is still well liked" thoughts but it doesn't provoke my curiosity beyond that.
Guess I'm lucky that the people I'm surrounded by don't watch it as part of their holidays viewing experience/background noise playlist.

I might watch it this year. See what I think of it as an adult.
