(Anonymous) 2023-02-03 12:48 am (UTC)(link)I don't remember where I first heard this, but the idea was that syringe we see Inara with wasn't a suicide plan but some weird chemical she could inject herself with so everyone who had sex with her would die. And then, after a reaver attack, we'd discover her (corpse?) surrounded by tons of dead reavers. Which, like, YIKES, but also how the fuck would you exposition that out?
If you google "Inara syringe" there's a cbr article that links to an interview so this might be legit.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-03 01:22 am (UTC)(link)I'm not saying Firefly would've been a masterpiece, nor am I opposed to criticism of Whedon's work, but personally I LOVE the idea of a character being like, "I can't stop them from raping me but I can use what they're going to do to me to take them out." I find that an incredibly interesting and cathartic handling of the subject matter.

*shrug*
But I still enjoyed it, enjoyed the 'verse that grew from it, enjoyed that it was sci-fi that didn't tip over too far into the science stuff so that it had no life, but still gave us space ships and cool computer interfaces and planets and stuff.
