Firefly was severely overrated up through ~2008 or so, then it was somewhat overrated up through 2015 or so. I have a really hard time saying it's still overrated now. People don't love it as much as they used to, people who hate it are now very open about being critical about it, and everyone actively hates the guy who made it.

I thought everyone agreed about this now.

Maybe OP thinks Firefly is incredibly bad. Like, worst TV show of all time, worse than Baywatch level bad.

Baywatch was bad in a fun way, though.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-03 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
People watched Baywatch for the plot?

(Anonymous) 2023-02-03 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly no. I still see Firefly in different discussions about shows closed too soon.
I see it enough times that my friend is making soft fun about my ire

The only real opinion on Firefly I've ever had was there wasn't enough fan smut involving Wash. I like my porn with a dash of comedy.

I'd totally read some Wash/Zoe smut. Actually, now I'm going to hunt for some.

if a single person still stans for Firefly it remains overrated.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-02 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that a lot of the adoration of Firefly was fueled by the "what could have been" factor. Like 80% of it. Only it turned out, when some of Joss's plans were revealed, was the "what could have been" was pretty icky.

Having the space hooker raped to death by space cannibals, for example. The man has issues!

eurgh, really??

(Anonymous) 2023-02-03 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
OMG really?
Anyone has a source? I want to read something that would fuel my Firefly hate

(Anonymous) 2023-02-03 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
DA

I don't remember where I first heard this, but the idea was that syringe we see Inara with wasn't a suicide plan but some weird chemical she could inject herself with so everyone who had sex with her would die. And then, after a reaver attack, we'd discover her (corpse?) surrounded by tons of dead reavers. Which, like, YIKES, but also how the fuck would you exposition that out?

If you google "Inara syringe" there's a cbr article that links to an interview so this might be legit.

It was never in the plan for Inara herself to be raped to death. The idea that she would be violently raped by reavers (just not to death) was a possible future plot point, though.

I'm not saying Firefly would've been a masterpiece, nor am I opposed to criticism of Whedon's work, but personally I LOVE the idea of a character being like, "I can't stop them from raping me but I can use what they're going to do to me to take them out." I find that an incredibly interesting and cathartic handling of the subject matter.

I remember reading about that and in the end Mal "Finally regards Inara with respect" or "Sees her true dignity" or some shit like that. Like, WHAT?!

(Anonymous) 2023-02-03 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, I would find that type of storyline cathartic in the right context too, but it would land oddly for me in a hypothetical later Firefly season.

AYART

That would be what I'm referring to!

Sure.
*shrug*
But I still enjoyed it, enjoyed the 'verse that grew from it, enjoyed that it was sci-fi that didn't tip over too far into the science stuff so that it had no life, but still gave us space ships and cool computer interfaces and planets and stuff.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-03 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yup.
