Do you refuse to write a summary and rate a fic? *sigh* Yes, some people do. I have run into a couple of fics that were unrated, no summary, and minimal tags. I mean, not a lot, but still.

But yeah, tags should inform, and function as both enticement (for readers who are looking for those things) and warning (for readers who are avoiding those things).

People often do not read fanfic to be truly surprised. Also, no one has time to take a chance on a fanfic that they're going to turn out to wish they hadn't clicked on.

Both are especially true for smutty fic *shrug*

I’m not squished by much so I just skip most tags altogether, but the tags are still there for folks who need them.

Shrug. It depends. I'm usually pretty tag heavy - and I'll always give an idea of the general tone of a piece.

But once I tagged a fic as Choose Not To Warn because it was the end of a series and I didn't want the readers to be sure that the main character wouldn't die, and sometimes an important character gets tagged Mystery Guest because part of the story is working out who they are.

Some tags genuinely DO spoil fics, though. Like, "Major Character Death"? I hate when people tag for that because then I spend the entire fic trying to guess who is going to die and it takes away all the impact when it finally happens.

*shrug* I don't feel like spoiling a twist, or other things that might not have much of an impact when you know beforehand. If that bothers you, you're free to check out all the stories that spoil all to hell.

I'm one of those people that doesn't like tags much as I find it does give away plot elements sometimes and I personally don't want to know everything going in.

BUT.

I am also of the opinion that people should tag however they want to tag and I can just just choose to not read the tags.

I hate this argument, especially on AO3 as AO3 lets you hide both warnings and tags if you want to. All that's left is pairings and characters. If you don't want to be spoiled at all by how a fic is tagged, you don't have to be!

I love tags and I personally, privately, find the refusal to tag pretentious (with very occasional exceptions). So yeah, for the most part I agree with this secret.

Also, when a fic genuinely is the kind of fic that benefits from remaining tagless, then IMO that in and of itself is basically it's own tag. Like, "Do not read this expecting to have your Id tickled and your dopamine receptors massaged," "It's not that kind of fic," "No seriously."

YMMV though. People can do what they want. I just don't read fics without tags unless the fic comes highly recommended by someone who is prepared to give me a little bit of context.

I wouldn't even say it's cringe. Fantasies that take place in fiction can be a safe space for women (and young women) to explore their desires, look at what makes that relationship dynamic tick, etc. Romanticizing it or moving that to real life would be a problem, of course. But fiction is fiction is fiction.

Firefly was severely overrated up through ~2008 or so, then it was somewhat overrated up through 2015 or so. I have a really hard time saying it's still overrated now. People don't love it as much as they used to, people who hate it are now very open about being critical about it, and everyone actively hates the guy who made it.

Endings of books

Lately I've realized just how much the ending of a book matters to me. I could be loving the book, but then the ending sucks, and it ruins the whole book for me. Or a book could be just okay, but it has a great ending, and that elevates my opinion of the book overall.

How important is a good ending to you guys?
