Endings of books

(Anonymous) 2023-02-02 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Lately I've realized just how much the ending of a book matters to me. I could be loving the book, but then the ending sucks, and it ruins the whole book for me. Or a book could be just okay, but it has a great ending, and that elevates my opinion of the book overall.

How important is a good ending to you guys?

The ending makes or breaks the novel.

I mostly don't care about endings. The last 10% of a book is just 10% of the book. An ending has to be exceptionally good or bad for it to matter that much. Most books just end.

Yes and yes. I still remember being utterly disappointed at the ending of a manga I read that it tainted every bit of the rest of the story.

Was it Bunny Drop, and if so just consider the anime the true version because it got rid of the bad part at the end.

Depends on the ending I think? Like, the ending of The Haunting of Hill House had me raging because it was just like... WHAT???

they're not books, they're movies, but the endings of The Best Offer and The Purple Rose of Cairo made me so mad I can never watch either of them again, and I was really enjoying them until the endings.

Most endings don't go hard enough for my liking so I've learned to be generally apathetic towards them. If most of a book was good, then it was a good book in my book regardless if the ending was lackluster.

Extremely! Count me as another person who could be enjoying a story but then never wants to do anything with it again if the ending sucks.

Depends. There are endings that are just ok, they usually don't taint my impression. I prefer mediocre ending to no ending. But if the ending sucks, yeah, it means the whole thing sucks

Of paramount import, in any media. I have DVD box sets of tv shows I bought before they were over that I can't watch because it's too upsetting for me that they ruined the ending. I don't watch or read anything anymore until it's done and I know the ending isn't going to ruin the whole thing for me. I've been burned too many times.

I know how you feel.

Do you feel this way about procedural / episodic TV shows?

Re: Endings of books

AYRT

Most procedurals are copaganda, so I don't watch those anyway. But yes, I don't watch tv shows that are still open canon.

Not all procedurals are police procedurals, stuff like medical shows count as procedurals too

But, fair enough, I guess

To be honest, I love vague endings, but they need to be set up properly, and they work much better when the novel isn't necessarily rooted in realism (like The Giver and American Psycho).

I'd say good ending comes number three for me after complex, interesting characters and good worldbuilding. All three are vital to a good book.

It means a lot to me. That's why I struggle to write good endings, much less find a way to end the story.

It won't always be a deal breaker if the ending sucks, but I do want emotional catharthis of some kind at the end of a book.

As a writer I am super good with setup and starting stories. I can be good/great with getting the plot to move along. But where is this thing taking us? And when does it end? I don't know. 😂😅

Not hugely important, in most cases. Some of my favorite books have weak endings. And conversely, a great ending can't make me forget the fact that the earlier parts of the book were kind of a slog.

The exceptions are when the ending retroactively changes what I loved (or hated) about the earlier parts. Like, if my favorite part of the book is a character whom I read as a kind and moral person, and the ending reveals that they're a serial killer. Or if my biggest frustration with a book is its plot holes, and the ending recontextualizes what I thought was happening and makes me realize that they weren't plot holes after all.

But endings that retroactively change the rest of the story for me are pretty rare. Usually the rest of the story is more important to me than the ending.

The ending is the best part for me. There's so much I can overlook and let slide if the ending is killer.
