(Anonymous) 2023-02-05 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)That's really not the same thing, though. Paying money for a physical item that costs money to produce in the first place makes logical sense. You're not paying for the zine itself so much as you are paying for the costs that go into making the zine - that's why doujinshi are so cheap in Japan, for example. The artists aren't making actual profit off them, they're just paying for the costs of printing the doujinshi.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-05 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)There are good and robust reasons why monetization can't be allowed *on AO3 specifically*. But the idea that ko-fis, or commissions, or projects like physical zines are an existential threat to fandom is ridiculous. It's not 1995.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-05 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)Strip the serial numbers off and sell your shit on Amazon, if you think you'd make a profit. Some people do.
My most popular fic has over 10k kudos. Do I think readers would give me ten cents to read it? Hahaha, no.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-05 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)Artists and authors accepting donations in the purest sense, no strings attached, no paywalled content, just "buy me a coffee if you liked this thing that will continue to be free" is also fine to me.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-05 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)The moment you start putting fandom stuff behind a paywall, fandom ceases to be for everyone. It turns into "you can only participate in fandom if you have the money to spend on it," which defeats the entire purpose of fandom in the first place.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-05 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)I do think though that if a fan of some obscure C-novel for example, that you had no interest in or plans on translating, commissioned you to translate it and provide the translation to them, that is a fair case in which they should expect to pay you for your time. If they or you then want to release the translation for free to everyone, even better!

(Anonymous) 2023-02-06 01:09 am (UTC)(link)Your last sentence. Yes. This is the big reason I'm wary of money and fanfic crossing paths so much, too. We already see how messy things get when people are upset that someone got more kudos or comments or bookmarks than them. Throw money into that mix and it'll just add to that stress.
It also takes away from people's insistence that they're "just doing this for fun!" when someone comes in to critique their work or something. Well, no, not if you're getting paid for it, you're not. At least, that's not the only reason you're writing anymore, it's not just> a fun hobby anymore.
And I say all of this as someone who also struggles financially and can sympathize with people's desire to want to get a little extra money for necessities and whatnot I totally understand that desire to get paid to help with all of that, I just don't know that this is the best route to make that happen.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-05 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)Totally with you. Making money from fanworks is inexcusable.
