Minoans are the civilization from Crete which predates Bronze era greece which is where most of our info comes. they have a whole ass different language and a completely different set of gods (except for like a gaia like figure, and Demeter and Persephone). At most you learn about linear a in social studies, but I don't think that's knowledge, you know?

Yeah, the Minoans did not consider themselves Greek at all. They had wars over not being Greek.

I mean, to be fair, OP said 'who has ever heard of these guys?' (emphasis mine). I would say knowing about the Minoan civilisation through a cursory understanding of Greek mythology counts as 'hearing' about it (just not much else).

considering how many comments keep bringing up minos and minotaur which has zero overlap since Evans merely associated the two because of Crete, and the commenters here tend to have some broader knowledge than like a general public, im going to said that OP is right, if a understandably hyperbolic and that the general population has not heard of minoan civilization.

Eh, I would say the secret is aimed at F!S first, and there's no indication on the secret that the OP is mentally separating F!Sers from the gen pop. Seeing as there are plenty of other comments here that are enthusiastic about Minoans, I'd say that OP was wrong when it came to the literal meaning of their hyperbolic statememt. However, they're probably closer to right in terms of the sentiment behind the hyperbole, i.e. that most people don't know enough about the Minoans to actively want historical dramas about them.

the secret being aimed at f!s doesn't mean the sentiment regarding knowledge is. contextually it's about the what people producing shows are influenced by. that's not f!s. i invoked f!s only to demonstrate what a more well-rounded knowledge base understands, and there's plenty of confusion. this could only be exacerbated by the people producers are directing their show towards. op's right.

OP said 'who has ever heard of the Minoans'. OP has been proven literally wrong by many responses to their secret from people who have, in fact, heard of the Minoans, including your own, lol. I have agreed that their sentiment is probably right, but that doesn't change that the actual words they used are wrong.

straight up, if hyperbole is beyond you, that's fine. if you're taking hyperbole literally as a sign to correct the statement, that's hilarious.

Hyperbole's great. But if the hyperbole can be immediately contradicted, it loses it's effectiveness, invites criticism, and even looks a bit silly.

Heard of/ not heard of is an objective binary (even if you argue that it isn't). Used in hyperbole, it leaves the author open to others picking holes in their argument.

Better phrasing would have been 'who even cares' - that's subjective, so OP's side can be supported more easily. It's also pretty easy to argue that if you don't know enough about a subject you don't care about it.

hyperbole can always be immediately contradicted, relies on being obviously open for critical attack and is deliberately silly lmao. right, so it's beyond you AND you want to correct it. this is great! i honest to god hope you do this in outside the internet. this is the type of conversation that is really fun to watch.
