I think I've commented already on a thread. But it is awfully annoying!
No. I don't want to read about this exact body parts. I am sometimes in the mood, but it's my choice. If I expect to see dicks in my smut, I want to see dicks. Especially since it does affect my body image. Maybe not on a triggering and dysphoria level, but it can spiral me into some self-hatred.

Yeah, I think my feeling here is, always tag. Also, I don't think that trans!character should be the only framework available when people want to write that kind of story.

Nothing is worse than surprise body parts in smut. Like, if you have to trick people into reading your fic, that's not a great look.

I totally agree. Either they don't tag it at all or its buried among a shitload of other tags.

There are certain characters I HC as trans anyways so it'll be a pleasant surprise if someone writes a fanfic for them where they are trans, but other times there will be a shitload of "trans" fics for characters I HC as cis with absolutely no indication of them being trans, so theres that.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-11 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Fair. I'm trans and I agree that people should be tagging their trans porn, so that I can find it easier.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-11 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, this a problem entirely solvable by tagging! I am also trans and sometimes I want to be reading trans porn but sometimes I really, really don't want to, and I would like to have the choice.

I just wish people would use the "trans character" tag at least so I can filter it out or specifically look for it, depending on the day... It's so annoying when you have to really carefully read the tags to see for example if there is some vague "vaginal fingering" tag or something in there that indicates the m/m ship tagged has a trans character (or even two).

Do think the new AO3 feature that lets you block authors will come in handy there, cause I can't always keep track of authors who do this all the time.

I have a similar but much worse secret. I feel the same way about surprise!trans fics, but for a worse reason, which is that when it comes to what my brain finds hot, a character’s genitals have to match their gender presentation. If they don't, it's a turn-off for me.

Trans men are men and trans women are women. I want trans people to be able to live in safety and respectful acceptance, whether they’re passing or non-passing, pre-op or post-op or abstaining. I also want dating to be easier and safer for trans people than it currently is. And I wish society didn't make it harder for trans people to feel desirable in their bodies.

But what my brain finds hot is what my brain finds hot. (In all fairness, there are quite a lot of things my brain finds to be turn-offs; my brain is a fussy bitch about such things.)

I thought about making this a secret of its own, but F!S gets tons of trans-focused secrets already and I don't feel like it needs one more.

I really hate when people try to claim that you shouldn't tag for that to "normalize" trans bodies in smut when it's like... you do realize that it can be really dysphoric for a lot of trans people to be hit with that when they're not expecting it, right?

(Anonymous) 2023-02-12 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
I'm trans, and once I had a miserable experience reading a m/m fic where one of the characters was trans. To be clear, it was properly tagged for. But it ended in the two guys having PIV sex, and the trans guy who has been dysphoric throughout the fic decides "oh, I guess this is why I'm this way, because our bodies fit together so perfectly and sex could never be this right if I had a dick." (Because apparently only PIV sex is true and good.)

FLAMES. ON THE SIDE OF MY FACE.

It was so upsetting and sent me into a horrible dysphoria spiral. And as you can see, I'm still mad about it years later.

To be fair, I don't see how that could have been tagged for. But it seriously put me off reading fic with trans characters, and I'm only now starting to feel able to try it again.

(If I remember right, the author was cis. I've read trans fic by trans authors where I haven't liked the story or where their take on being trans is very much not mine. But I don't think I've seen that level of WTFery from a trans author.)

I am so sorry anon, this is some heternormative bullshit

(Anonymous) 2023-02-12 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
i don't like significant, character-altering headcanons sprung on me either. it's rude. authors need to put that kind of thing up front both to make it easier to avoid and easier to find for people who do want those headcanons.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-12 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
This. I generally avoid certain genitals due to how they make me feel uncomfortable, not to the point of dysphoria, but as someone who never experienced why PiV sex is good (been there, done that, it was more of a let down but an eye opened at the same time) it's kind of a turn off to be hit with it all the time to the point I have to read through m/m ship tags for vaginal fingering or ANY sort of mention of the like.

Note, that I have no problems when it is written for OCs or in novels, but with fanfic where there is a set canon already, I expect people to tag when something is different from canon, even if the general fandom "treats fanon as canon". This also seems to be a recent thing and I have no idea where it came from. WHy did people stop tagging? When did penises became icky to write?

(Anonymous) 2023-02-12 07:33 am (UTC)(link)
Same goes for people pushing down their pronoun headcanon without properly explaining in the first note that the characters are not using their canon ones. Going into the fic and realising it halfway that the it/them was actually one of the characters and not an OC of the author was an embarrassing experience.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-12 08:58 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god oh this. One of my fandoms had a shift there authors started to use "they" for canon male character. I mean, people change and grow and he had some gender fuckery going on, but I just stopped recognizing this person they all writing about

(Anonymous) 2023-02-12 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it bothers me too. YKINMK, YMMV and all that, but when I am into a particular pairing - no matter what the gender/sex of the partners are - I want to read about those genitals and more importantly those characters. When cis characters are trans in fic or there's gender swapping or whatever, the characters are often (understandably) OOC too. So what appeal is there for me, as a member of the fandom, to read about two unrecognizable characters with genitals I'm not in the mood for? Just tag your fic so people who do want to read it can find it and people who don't can avoid it.
