Yes, that would be awesome.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-21 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
And in the end there is a coup and it gets destroyed, because the British Museum is the only reason most of them still exist.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-21 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
yawn

(Anonymous) 2023-03-22 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Nah.

Yeah... cause we definitely can't trust the Elgin Marbles to those heathens over in that (checks notes) European country, Greece.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-22 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
At the time of the Elgin Marbles' removal, however, Greece was under rule of the Ottoman Empire. It's possible the later War of Greek Independence might've threatened their preservation. I'm not saying this justifies their removal, mind you. Only that at the time, Greece wasn't as stable as it is today. I personally believe that the UK should give them back.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-22 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Within the last ten years Greece had an economic collapse so bad they came within a hairs breadth of yet another violent revolution. Not to mention they are an earthquake hotspot. They aren't stable or safe just yet.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-22 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I thought I'd be polite and not mention that, but at least those aren't an ongoing war of independence?

(Anonymous) 2023-03-22 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
whereas the uk is, of course, a global icon of good governance and political stability

(Anonymous) 2023-03-22 09:12 am (UTC)(link)
Tbh, yes it has been for most of the last century.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-22 10:46 am (UTC)(link)
Britain has its fair share of problems, mostly self inflicted too, but being constantly on the verge of bloodsoaked revolution isn't one of them. In fact I'd say going too long without a peasants' uprising is more the problem in the UK. A thousand years of breeding for forelock tugging amongst the masses has left its population far too servile and submissive. Greece, by counterpoint, last had a revolution and mass destruction within my own lifetime. It hasn't even gone a half century without one, and only missed out on one in the economic collapse by a minor miracle.

And imagine if stuff had been returned to the stable Persia or Iraq in the seventies? Or Egypt and North Africa pre-the Arab Spring. Those artifacts would be gone now, my friends. Or worse, pre-Soviet Invasion Afghanistan when it was being Westernized. I'm sorry, but the case for the BM being a net positive force in terms of conservation of historical objects, even if it feels yucky, is quite solid.

I didn’t have a strong opinion on returning the Parthenon Marbles until I saw the disdain they are displayed with in person. They’re displayed out of context, at an inappropriate viewing angle, with patronizing placards about how they were salvaged from the savages (not verbatim but that’s the vibe).

Give it back. They have value and the removal was theft. If it gets destroyed, it gets destroyed - it’s theirs to destroy and the only reason people care is because it’s white/western “”””cultural heritage””””.

You have a valid point about valuable artifacts returning to countries who lack the facilities and security to protect them, but it's a real touchy subject and very few people want to hear it, as you can see.

Dev Patel leads an ensemble cast.

Or the ensemble cast means the gang can take turns leading the caper and starring in the movies. Now I will have to think of more actors to include in my imaginary ensemble...

(Anonymous) 2023-03-22 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh, can I play? I'd add Ming-Na Wen (the jaded vet), Regé-Jean Page (the smooth operator), Natacha Karam (the badass), Harry Shum Jr.(the chameleon), Gugu Mbatha-Raw (the enigma), Bill Skarsgård (the weirdo), and Jenna Ortega (the novice)

nayrt but I like the cut of your jib!

(Anonymous) 2023-03-22 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Thanks! I very much enjoyed imagining this team coming together.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-22 09:24 am (UTC)(link)
Original AYRT-- you're hired as casting director!

(Anonymous) 2023-03-22 11:07 am (UTC)(link)
Cool, let's manifest this venture into existence!

(Anonymous) 2023-03-22 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, Dev Patel could absolutely do it, but I think he wants to be more of a serious Actor.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-22 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
As close as we're getting is the first part of Black Panther 1. But that would be cool, I'm here for it

Funnily enough there was a kid’s book with a scaled-down version of this plot from the ‘80s, called Scared Silly. From what I remember, 2 sisters and their dad on a road trip end up at a kind of hybrid shoe museum/mystery spot (the sort of place where one room is a maze and another room has its furniture on the ceiling) and while wandering around with the requisite goofy employees find out that someone is stealing the shoes on exhibit. They of course solve the mystery - but it turns out the thief’s motive is repatriation (explained at an elementary school level).

(Still a kid’s book, so yes, the owner is swayed by the thief’s explanation and agrees that it’s for the best.)

I happened on my old copy a few months ago which is why this is fairly fresh in my head and also being really surprised - totally forgot that motive, just remembered that the thief was sympathetic. And the upside-down room.

Nah. Private collectors, they're the real villains. It takes cultural treasures out of the public sphere. I want to see a film where someone breaks into private collections.

Or alternatively, any museum but the British museum because there are hundreds just as bad, and everyone acting like it's just one country guilty of this stuff is getting boring and pathetic.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-22 09:25 am (UTC)(link)
Hm, I could go for raiding private collections in a movie. There really isn't enough controversy about how much historically relevant, interesting stuff is inaccessible to everyone who would want to study it simply because a rich person is keeping it to themselves.
