o.O

I think even neurotypical writers are typically nerdy enough to spend hours on research for their worldbuilding.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-03 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't because most readers won't know when something's inaccurate and I'm not interested in impressing the 5% of readers who would actually appreciate it.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-03 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
This idea (described in the secret, not the secret) is kinda silly to me, cause neurodivergent traits exist on a spectrum and are something people can experience for many different reasons...? One person may be autistic, one person may not be, but they can have personality traits and hobbies in common. It's not that deep, it's cool that we can relate to each other on stuff like that. No need to split hairs.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-04 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah there's a definite trend in online ND spaces to ascribe everything to their neurodivergence rather than recognising that it's a totally normal, common thing for people to do, regardless of whether they're NT or not.

It reminds me of the thing where people think having a shopping bag full of shopping bags is a cultural thing. I've seen it described as a Latino thing, a British thing, a white American thing, and a black American thing, among others. Some things are just universal, folks.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-04 12:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Using cookie tins to store sewing supplies is another. That had a lot of nonwhite people bonding over how they thought it was just a their-culture thing but coming to the conclusion that it was actually an all-nonwhite-cultures thing, and I hated to burst their bubbles by saying my white family did it too. They probably would've gotten mad at me for unknowingly stealing from their culture and making the discussion about my white self anyway.

it does feel like this all gets a little "neurotypical people drive a car like THIS" at times

Weird this posted today. I just read on reddit that NTs are the reason concrit culture has died. Something about how fandom went mainstream and the NTs invaded it. Apparently, NTs are too emotional and biased, or something. So, I guess we're just getting blamed for everything now?

(Anonymous) 2023-04-04 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's a terrible take. I don't know about autism, but people with ADHD frequently struggle with emotional dysregulation and rejection sensitive dysphoria. Not saying we're the real reason concrit culture is "dead"--just saying it makes NO sense to accuse NTs of being too emotional when plenty of neuro-atypical people practically bond over the fact that regulating emotions can be more challenging for us sometimes.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-04 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I was gonna say you know why I stopped giving concrit to people? Because I had too many people who claimed to have ADHD/autism/you name it throw absolute shitfits over something as benign as being told "hey, actually this topic came up in episode 25 so saying that Character A never considered it isn't quite accurate!"

Meanwhile I read a discussion with a lot of people claiming they couldn't read critically because they were autistic.

Of course, that's not how they said it; they said they couldn't tell when they were dealing with an unreliable narrator, or more than that, a narrator who is blatantly lying. So stop asking people not to criticize a story for being inconsistent, because autistic people literally can't do that! It's all bullshit, maybe you think it's because you're autistic, but the real problem is that nobody wants to think critically anymore, not that you can't.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-04 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Lol. Fandom has the same percentage of NTs to NDs as the general pop, ot'a just got more people in verbal now. You don't have to be ND to want to read about your fave fictional characters boning. Smh.

I disagree with most hot take writing posts that go around the internet. Like 'everyone thinks their writing is crap' or 'editing is the worst stage' or 'writers always do thing X Y and Z.' I hardly ever see a 'writers writing' post that I relate to. I don't know if I'm doing it wrong or what.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-04 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
This but for art.
Generalization is stupid af. And thanks to this posts I always feel like an imposter

(Anonymous) 2023-04-06 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
'editing is the worst stage'
yeah what the hell, editing is the only fun part

(Anonymous) 2023-04-04 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen videos like that (not always autism, sometimes it's ADHD/ADD or OCD or something else) and it's just so weird to me. I don't understand why people need validation like that.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-04 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
I have ADHD and I don't understand it either, frankly.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-04 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
This thing, besides being stupid, is the definition of logical fallacy. Any writing with good world building must have been written by someone ND by default, apparently.

Also, there's a difference between building ND people up within the community by focusing on positives, and building ND people up by tearing NT people down. Calling all NT people bad at world building in worrying is the latter.

I'm not going to say it's as bad as NT people dunking on ND people, because there's a difference between punching up and punching down, but it's still not cool, you know?

(Anonymous) 2023-04-04 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Because a neurotypical person has never, ever done detailed research before. Right. I'd be pissed too, OP.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-04 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I've run into this one and if a neurotypical writer has done detailed research they are ACTUALLY neurodiverse and just weren't/aren't diagnosed. It's probably correct in some cases (Tolkein, for example) but also it's constant shifting of the goalposts.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-04 08:01 am (UTC)(link)
Begs the question that if so many people are ACTUALLY neurodiverse, at what point does neurodivergence stop being...divergent?

(Anonymous) 2023-04-04 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
While I haven't seen this exact (bad, inaccurate) take, I've seen similar posts on tumblr. Like look, I get it. Being non-NT is tough, and it's only natural that people want to give themselves and others emotional support for solidarity, etc. But this is just dumb. NTs aren't, as a group, the cause of all your problems and repeating nonsense about how super duper special non-NTs are because they're non-NT just feels like someone's trying way too hard to compensate for something. It's like being a dude who calls themselves an alpha male and drives a really huge truck on lifted tires, with truck nutz hanging off the back.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-04 09:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yeppp. My favorite are the posts about how NTs are bad friends because we don't understand how you can pick up months later like no time has passed. No, bitch, we understand that and we can do it just fine, but our feelings still get hurt when we're ignored for months, just like yours.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-04 10:06 am (UTC)(link)
If your feelings are getting hurt over being ignored then you’re not doing what they talked about, which is picking up where you left off with the person like literally no time has passed.

The point, you missed it.

ND person here. I have mild ( extremely mild ) schizoaffective disorder.

Never have I or any of the voices in my head ever said something so impossibly illogical. I feel for you, OP.

Hopefully your fic writing buddy will learn better. I know that I hope so.
