They did?? I mean, fair, Sam Neill is hot, but I always liked that they were just colleagues and don't recall even a hint of romance. Her attitude was who the hell cares about lame ass men when actual real dinosaurs are walking around, and she was RIGHT.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-21 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh?? They were together in the first one.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-21 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
+1

I haven't seen the movie in yonks but my memory is that they were always together, it was just played lightly. And it was a whole thing with the Jeff Goldblum character making a pass at her.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-21 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
That was always my interpretation as well.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-21 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah they were definitely a couple in the first movie. I haven't seen the newest one yet but... I am less upset that they got them together again and more confused about what happened to her husband and kids from JP3?

(Anonymous) 2023-04-21 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't get romance. I got close colleagues and close friends. But not romance.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-21 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Incorrect. Go watch it again. Subtextually, he is way into her, but she is not into him (and definitely flirts with Ian for fun).

(Anonymous) 2023-04-21 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
In their introductory scenes they're arguing about whether they want kids and she calls him "honey"

(Anonymous) 2023-04-21 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Ian asks Grant "are you two.....?" and Grant says yes.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-22 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
I have only seen the first one on TV and wasn't paying close attention, but even at that I got the impression they were either a couple or a former couple. They definitely struck me as having obvious chemistry.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-22 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of figured they'd tried it, it hadn't worked out at least in part because of the kids thing, and Alan was still carrying a torch.

They are not together in the book, but they are absolutely a couple in the first movie. Early in the third movie, you're briefly lead to believe that they married and had children, until it's revealed that she's married to someone else and he's just visiting. I think the scene and how it's set-up doesn't really hold without their previously established relationship.

I loved them as a couple. Full of mutual respect and professionalism, but also the easy comfort of two people who understand one another despite their contrasting personalities. I think Alan's grumpy stoicism could have fallen flat without Ellie there to poke fun and take him down a few pegs. I'm extremely happy they got back together. In my opinion their relationship is exactly how you write a couple that isn't just a stereotyped single unit.

Both you and the other commenters in this thread are WRONG. I have seen Jurassic Park about a billion times and ship them like burning so I believe I have expertise in this topic.

They are NOT together in the first one. But it is clear that Alan 100% simps for her and would do anything for her if she asks. But she knows he is too much of a grumpy old man obsessed with his work to make her happy (then).

For that reason I am totally fine for them to get together in later life after having their own life experiences (her, having a partner and family; him, continuing to simp for her hard for 30 years).

Thank you for coming to my TED Talk, my thesis will be published in June.

MALCOLM
By the way, Dr. Sattler - she's not like, uh, available,
is she? - -

GRANT
Why?

MALCOLM
Why? Oh, I'm sorry. Are you two, uh - - are?

GRANT
Yeah.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-22 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Is Grant saying that because they're together, or because he just wants to cockblock Malcolm, though? Because I can totally see Grant doing that.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-22 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Because they’re together. She calls him dear or something right at the beginning and they have the conversation about her wanting kids and him not wanting kids. Plus there are cast and crew interviews where it’s explicitly stated they were in a relationship. It’s even on the Wikipedia page for the movie and for three when she gets married to…forgettable guy. I think it was even mentioned in three about how Ellie and Grant didn’t work ou but tbh I only saw that one once long ago.

AYRT

From the script, but either not filmed or was cut:

ELLIE
Anything else, you old fossil?

GRANT
Yeah, plenty. Some of them can't walk!

ELLIE
It frustrates me so much that I love you, that I need to
strangle you right now!

Ellie playfully takes Grant's hat off and gives him a tight hug.
They kiss.

If it’s not in the movie, it doesn’t matter. Editing exists for a reason.

Watch it just once more and then again if you keep missing it: they’re together. Remember the whole thing about kids? She wants a kid and he doesn’t and a HUGE subplot is him getting stuck with the kids and warming to children in general. There are interviews with Steven Spielberg and Sam Neill for sure about the relationship and I seem to recall Laura Dern joking about it in one of this interview clippy things they always had as time fillers on like Encore and Bravo.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-22 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was pretty young and not a shipper in the slightest when I saw the first movie, but even I picked up on that fact.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-22 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
They were together at first. Sorry OP. But I was really happy when they reconciled in their old age after they'd had a chance to pursue their independent careers fully and were ready to be together.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-22 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
They were together in the first movie, but I was glad they were broken up by the third and disappointed that the obligatory het happy ending happened in the last one. They broke up for a good reason (kids y/n) and they were great friends despite that! A man and a woman can be just friends! Except in Hollywood films.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-22 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
THIS. I stopped watching once the crisp rat arrived, so I had no idea they got back together. What a let down.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-22 10:37 am (UTC)(link)
I've avoided the Jurassic World movies but in Jurassic Park they were together but broke up because she wanted babies.
If they get together at the end that sucks because he wasn't good enough for her then, but now she's reproduced she can make do? Shades of How I Met Your Mother. Ugh.
