Even though people have pointed it out I don't understand why in this discussion it's always the asian part that's important. Katara and Sokka is inuit, but it always fell like in the movie discussions that the inspiration for their culture is ignored...

so agreed! a lot of people do tend to cast Noah as the top, and I think it's because he's the taller one (why this should make a different boggles my mind but that's what fandoms do >_>). also, I agree with Gershwhen, I like to think that they switch off, and play around with it. It's no fun to just fufill only one role and never change it up, in life or in fic, in my opinion.

I used to LOVE Hidden Frontier! In fact, I still have one of their flyers from a con I went to years ago hanging on my wall. This secret has inspired me to catch up with everything they've done since I fell off the wagon. Thank you anon!

I'd assume most of the HF fandom is on the forums at the site... which is great, getting a chance to interact so closely with the creators, but sometimes having that distance isn't so bad either. For instance, if that fic you're talking about is of an adult nature, the writers and actors could see it. It's hard for me to imagine being comfortable with a NC-17 fic inspired by a fan film in comparison to a big budget film, if that makes sense. I know it's hypocritical but it's true.

She said that if the culture, clothes, etc, are based on Asian culture, why can't they be played by Asians. Obviously she was, since Zuko is included in the casting. Sorry that you can't understand this simple fact.

We~ell, I would mind a lot more if Gaara's eye colour was a major thing about his character ... it's a whole different thing they changed Byakugan to orange or Sharingan to blue, or something. XD

Personal thing, but I think your secret would have had more credibility if you had a coloured manga image instead of an anime screenshot ... =/ Original sources, and all that ...

But there is in the real world. Are you going to hire fantasy-nationality actors to star in your movie? The cultures in the show are (mostly and heavily) Asian-inspired. Having non-Asians in such a real world set makes no sense. What is the obvious choice here?

To be honest I can understand this version of Chekov having some sort of naivety and innocent but most of that is depending on his background. If, because he has shown talent, his parents have pushed him to be all that he can building up to him going into Star Fleet early then he could very well be this guy who has all of this knowledge but slightly bellow average real life understanding for his age. Not the biggest problem in the world but is going to affect his actions or how he approaches something from time to time.

Otherwise, yeah he's seventeen. :/

H'okay, so how come when you translate that to a live action movie Paramount believes the kid automatically has to be white? Aang is not from this world or reality, but when you want to portray him using a real human being, why does white have to be the default? The casting directors have made it pretty clear that they were looking for caucasian actors for all four main roles from the get go.

Yup, it's totally cool to ~~steal~~ borrow several elements of various Asian cultures, and then leave the people who INVENTED those traditions/clothes/architecture/food/languages/weapons/etc. the hell out of it.
